Salon Or Barbers

Discussion of fashion elements and looks that are traditionally considered somewhat "femme" but are presented in a masculine context. This is NOT about transvestism or crossdressing.

1: im bald, so i dont use either.

2: there are NO barber shops in my town, so even the most redneck-y guys gotta go to great clips or one of those types.

I go to a beauty/cosmetology school that is close by.
They do everything a barber school or shop does and more for less
money. They do perms waves nails haircuts styling all at fantastic
prices. The students who graduate from this school are then placed
in shops such as Great Clips. To give you an idea and make you
jealous I pay 8.00 for a haircut with styling and shampoo. Closest
barber school is 20 miles away and would charge at least double
that amount and factor the gas mileage in also. Great Clips is a
fine place to go but after the haircut everything is extra cost.
Count my blessings to be in the right place - right time.

I would like the salon hands down over the barber shop even if I
have to put up with smelly perms/waves. Reason much better
service value. Oh all right I don't talk sports or fishing - leave it
at that!

Didn't make me jealous... I go to an expensive local salon and pay nothing. But then I did marry the owner, so maybe on further reflection I'm paying more than anyone else?

Have fun,

I use the local barber in our small town. It's the best haircut you can get for seven dollars and no charge for a week's worth of secondhand cigarette smoke, the latest deer and bear hunting reports, and general bull---t from the good ol' boys who hang out there!

I used to frequent a barber who was a fellow freemason but, after a stint in Queensland, where I ended up using my S.O.s hairdresser, I am now hooked in hairdressers. (Especially that cute apprentice :P )

Trim the split ends off myself. Hair's long enough that I can do that.

Salon every time. It ranges from the local salon in my small town (£10) to the odd trip to Vidal Sassoon (£60!!).

It's a more pleasurable experience, and an element of style creeps in. Put another way, you don't exit looking like an army cadet.

"The barber man was small and flash, as barbers mostly are./ He wore a 'strike your fancy' sash, he smoked a huge cigar./ He was a humorist of note and keen at repartee./ He laid the odds and kept a "tote" whatever that may be." From A.B. Paterson's poem, "The Man from Ironbark"

Funnily enough, in Australia at least, barber shops were regarded as dens of iniquity in Victorian times and, in a rule book for teachers of that era, it was an offence that warranted dismissal to be shaved in a barbers shop!

A visit to my eldest son's partner, as and when required!

Otherwise, it would be a case of: 'the fancier the salon, the least likely I would be to set foot therein'!

Neither - cut by my good lady wife (what little there is of it!).

OK, just for giggles and grins, I'll jump in here.

Whether I go to the local barber shop or the local salon depends on what I'm doing with my hair.

If I'm doing something simple and just need a trim, I go to the barber shop, admire his collection of motorcycle ephemera and pay $5 for the trim.

At the moment, I have my hair in long layers and have a body wave, so I go to the salon for that. There is also a manicurist who does manicures and pedicures the way I like. I can even get a massage there.

The barber is a mile from the house and the salon is half a mile.

An extra bonus is that between the house and the salon are the most excellent butcher shop locally and the best local bakery for bread.

In the other direction towards the barber shop, are the deli, the green grocer, the liquor shop, the best Italian bakery within 20 miles, Wal-Mart, the garden center, gym, bank, post office and movie theater.

All this and I can go out my back door and go x-c skiing.

Oops, I kinda got off topic. Sorry, but I love it here.

I go to a salon, but occasionally visit the barber for a quick trim or a straight razor shave.

I like to respond to old threads...

I have let my hair grow out since February 2010, while visiting a barber to trim up the frayed ends on a monthly basis.

I determined in July that my hair had grown too long to be adequately serviced by a barber, so I went to a salon for a styling.
It's either pay $10.00 (US) every 3 weeks for a man's haircut or $25 for a woman's styling every 8 to 10 weeks so the cost is a wash. I would like to see if my hair can go to almost waist length.

My hair goes down over the collar of my shirts and suit coats.

Now on the other hand, my wife got her hair chopped off with a hair length of a man's haircut and had it frosted. She also never wears skirts and I wear them all the time.

We go for walks in the evening - very interesting couple where the husband has long hair and wears a skirt and the wife has short hair with pants.
