Most men's shoes are clunky in appearance. So I am really left with little option.
I feel your pain on that one -- guys' shoes are viscerally boring. But, pretty much anything other than dress shoes, loafers, work boots, and trainers are pretty much out. Mens' sandals seem to be universally hideous and, I think, are unfit to be seen in except in certain contexts.
What the heck to do?....

Like ChristopherJ, I don't really have a "style" of my own yet; it's still developing, and even at that, it's more an aesthetic than a style. I've not confined myself to any given type of skirt (I wear all different lengths in appropriate settings), which I think is a good thing; what I'm starting to have problems with is what to wear "up top" other than my usual assortment of dress shirts (I don't wear tee-shirts in public; it's a grungy look and I don't like to look that way) and mens' waistcoats.
It's easy, just start wearing what the women are wearing with skirts
they have had years of expoerience, and they despite that also just follow what is put in front of them by the fashion people. Ofcourse not all shirts etc fit, because the arms are thinner, there is less give on the shoulders, and you don't have to be a full blown cross dresser either, shop around in every shop you can find, at least if you have the time, as most people have jobs and familys. By shopping around, you may find just that what you are looking for. It's not easy, but we know that. Finding tailor made men's shirts, with necks that are made to be worn open as women's are, would give the stunning effect often needed to give your skirt that compleet good look.
Shoes are nearly every skirt wearing man's nightmares.
Although freestylers go very far, shoes still are a problem, being not only narrow, ( here in the Netherlands) have very often high heels, and are not all of a pleasing style, for we men. There are some very suitable models, if they are in your foot size, and if they are available, and if you are then willing to pay the high price they cost. I have the very same problem. And am thinking about wearing pumps if I can find a pair suitable, but not because they are pumps, because the are nearly the only shoes that look right with skirts. It's time we had other shoes made for men. Pumps look good, but are not orthopedic. So the look of pumps, a suitable sole, with a thich heel, 3 cm high, should be great, looks good, walks good. So who's gonna make them, and market them for a reasonable price?
Boots, either women's or men's, can look good, but they are not my style, I have thought about them, but even they are in women's shoes often very "jazzed up" which isn't to my taste. They are more difficult to combine in my opinion, with skirts.

A man is the same man in a pair of pants or a skirt. It is only the way people look at him that makes the difference.
