Shorts under skirts and dresses

Discussion of fashion elements and looks that are traditionally considered somewhat "femme" but are presented in a masculine context. This is NOT about transvestism or crossdressing.

Shorts under skirts and dresses

Post by Brad »

Several women I know wear shorts under their skirts and dresses. The reasons given are usually for modesty or preventing thighs from rubbing together. On occasion, I have seen an unintended upskirt moment and noticed that the wearer had shorts under their skirt / dress. In my opinion, this is like wearing a skort, a fashion that I am not a fan of. What would be the point of wearing shorts under a skirt / dress? Why not just wear the shorts then? I feel that skirts and dresses are more attractive because there is an element of vulnerability which is not the case with shorts, and because the wearer must take extra care to keep knees together and use care when bending over, entering or exiting vehicles, and climbing stairs or escalators. This is even considering that many shorts show more leg than a skirt or dress. Seeing shorts underneath ruins this illusion and is like seeing the wizard behind the curtain. Any thoughts?

To be honest, I feel it's rather related to the length of the skirt. Some skirts are seriously short and I can imagine opting to wear shorts underneath. I don't really feel the need to see other people's underwear. And I imagine it depends on the context (work or not for example).

I know on /r/femalefashionadvice a school teacher was advised to wear bike pants under her skirt to avoid the small children crawling between her legs and loudly announcing the colour of her underwear. That is a fairly unusual situation though.

I have one skort, which I wouldn't wear if it didn't have the short bit. Though I hesitate to call it a short: it's some material that acts as a screen but would look seriously weird without the skirt. You don't notice it while wearing it.

I dunno really. I don't really have a strong opinion either way.

That might be OK for women or men when it's not warm out. Men have an organ that's designed for cooling that doesn't do its cooling job as well when wrapped up.

You won't find me in anything shorter than knee length or at least close to knee length, one main reason being that I don't wear shorts or anything else apart from shoes and socks under them, so for me, short skirts etc. are a no no. I do wear shorts, but not with skirts, don't understand the need or desire for both! Shorts are great for hot weather if I don't want to attract undue attention, skirts are for the feeling of freedom and my love of loose clothing and the way it moves. Together? not for me because shorts under a skirt would just feel like wearing shorts, cloth in the crotch etc. and would destroy the comfort of the skirt.

I think you have answered your own question. Wearing shorts allows the aesthetic of a skirt without the need to be overly careful.

Good for the wearer, but not the admirer hoping for a glance....

If you are going to wear shorts, why bother with a skirt?

In the work context, if the wearer, male or female, feels the need for shorts for modesty then the skirt itself is inappropriate.
I wouldn't but, hey whatever floats your boat.

Skirts only for me. No dresses. I've worn shorts under a kilt....Sacrilege ? I agree that short would spoil the feel of a nice skirt, which after all is precisely the reason for wearing them.

Yes, "Do not judge lest ye be judged" Matthew 7:1
Is anyone asking you to wear shorts underneath? Although you are not a fan of skorts, why does it seem to disturb you that others are wearing them? Is that not the same as others being disturbed by you wearing a skirt?

I don't see any problem with people wearing what they like. At times, society dictates what is appropriate to wear for certain occasions. Sometime I don't think it's a bad thing, school uniforms for example, other times I feel it completely impinges on people's personal freedom. Of course, whether we actually have any freedom at all is an argument in its own right, but I won't go there, at least not now :-)

Exactly, although males in bike shorts would gain a bit of modesty with a short skirt over the top.

There was an old thread re the "Bulge" which kind of brushed that very subject.
Opinions re silhouette were decidedly mixed as I recall.

Shorts under a mini is just another fashion choice, as long as they are comfortable with it why not? Who are we to judge? Some here are against skorts and cut the pants element out. A waste, I think, as I like the one skort I have. I've seen worse sights in my time - camel toe with very, very tight trousers for example.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

When I wear a shorter hemline, be it a dress or a skirt, I would want my legs to go all the way.. so I would not want any glimpse of bike shorts/shorts etc... just my legs. I wear a lot of mini hemlines - but I don't wear large volume skirt at that shortness - so they're more fitted skirts - which are very safe in a mini length.

In my mind the shorts under a skirt are like some running skirts and tennis skirts I have - they have inner shorts - a have a Nike tennis skirt which is a skirt with brightly patterned shorts underneath that come down the thighs a touch and are meant to visible. But this is active-wear not like regular clothing.

Just my 2 cents worth... or should it be 5cents now due to inflation....

Nzfreestyler, from you description it sounds like skorts. Skirt like outer garment with built in shorts.

Hi Grok

my skorts (I have a few tailored skorts) - they have a skirt front but the rear is like a pair of shorter shorts and there is no skirt bit on the back.

In that sense the tennis/sports skirts I mentioned, by comparison have a full skirt around them - so they are different.

cheers
