Hi trdrl92,
I'm new here too. Only two months ago I lacked the nerve to venture beyond my own property now I wear a skirt most of the time and it's been liberating. Most people don't notice or pay no heed, of the ones that do I've so far only received complements . Go for it.

You will find that "in the house", "out in the wilds" and "at work" are 3 entirely different scenarios each with inherent characteristics and tolerances. Mostly work, except for a few on this site, will be out of bounds to male skirt wearing, even if equality laws are in place, for various reasons.

Hello trdrl92,

Welcome to the SkirtCafe!

Sinned said something to the effect that work is no place to go in a skirt.

In my experience that's not necessarily so. I live inPortland, OR, but grew up outside NYC, and work as a temporary accountant. I wore skirts or dresses most days at the last three assignments I had with no problems whatsoever. One was a Fortune 50 company here in the Portland Metropolitan Area. Another was a small, closely-held manufacturer in Washington state. The 3rd was a non-profit, public charter school in Hawaii.

There were baby steps I took to get to this point, but it’s like everything else, if you’re not at least a little nervous, you’re not pushing yourself hard enough!

Good luck! And have fun.

Yeah, Dave, you may be in a more tolerant part of the US and for that you are fortunate and am envious. As also is the case with Steve who admits that his civil servant employment gives him an advantage over employees in the private sector and Carl who has found his own little niche. The vast majority of us are not so fortunate. But as Moon has said he is in an area where if he tried to involve skirt wearing with work he would be drawing unemployment now. In fact he came close to it at one point. I have the support of colleagues at work and we have an equality policy in place granting me ( hypothetically, at least ) immunity from dismissal for wearing a conformant skirt but I realise the all too real impracticality of wearing a skirt for work in my locale. Please don't assume that even baby steps enables the workplace to be tolerant of what, to them, seems an aberrant activity. They are run by managers who can be intolerant and get around the equality rules to make your employment unpleasant enough to cause you to leave without breaking any laws. In my case minimum hours and unpleasant shifts. I have warned them at work that on the last day before I retire I will wear a knee length black skirt conforming to company standards. How they take to that I have no idea of knowing. They could just send me home. Who knows? I would never encourage anyone to push the envelope as to regard to skirt wearing at work as employment is much too important an area to take risks with. Sorry, Dave, but realities are what they are.

I have worn a skirt at work on one or two occasions when we were having a charity event and it didn't go down well with my managers.

I'm well aware of the realities as well. As best as I can tell we're about the same age so I know the challenges and need for retaining employment. I also know there is a whole lot more acceptance of skirt and dress wearing by men than we give our fellow citizens credit for.

As I have said in numerous posts, thanks to the hard work of the various LGBTQ advocacy groups, there are a number of states in the US that, along with sexual orientation, protect gender expression in the workplace. And yes, under the law, men wearing skirts or dresses is considered allowable gender expression. Even knowing that, before I showed up in work in a skirt, I cleared it with my immediate supervised. In those conversations I never brought up the law and always talked about it as a personal accommodation to me that I was willing to abandon if it proved to be a problem. In all 3 cases, I was accommodated and there was NO problem with coworkers whatsoever.

In this forum I was criticized for asking permission instead of just asserting what my critic regarded as what should be an implied right. But as you suggested Dennis, we all have our own employment situation to consider and have to do what we feel is best. I'm just trying to say we're on more solid footing than most of us imagine and should act accordingly.

Sorry, Dave, I've reread my post and it comes across a bit more forceful than I intended. Maybe there is more acceptance and over here it's theoretically possible but my management aren't so accepting, unfortunately.

Apology accepted. :D :D No biggie.

Besides, as I said, you brought up an important point. Before you show up at work in a skirt or dress, you need to think through the probable response and how to manage it.
