Socks

Post by D McD »

Hi

I'm going to get a traditional Scottish tartan kilt, and am wondering about socks. Two questions.

Are long "walk socks" the best/only choice?

Should they be in matching tartan, or white, or any color one chooses?

Would appreciate any tips about sock selection.

Many thanks and Sláinte Mhath

David.

Socks should NOT match the kilt. That is what the "flashes" are for.
They 'blend' the tartan toward the shoes.

I'ld recommend a white or cream color Kilt hose. This works the best
for any kilt you wear.

Socks which match the kilt are only ever worn by Highland Dancers, in my experience.* How's your sword dancing?

*and only by women and girls, though that in itself hardly counts as a reason not to, at least not round here!
Keep on skirting,

I will wear black socks with my black kilt,
With a traditional kilt you don't watch the socks to it,
Don't wear white unless your in pipe band.

My self I tend to wear black mostly. I'm also not one do go all out with the traditional look.
If i'm playing pipes at a funeral i go all Black, Unless asked to dress more traditional.
No one mess's with a big guy in kilt

Wearing "BRIGHT" WHITE sox is questionable and has nothing to do with after the labor day holiday.

Cable knit sox are recommended - something with a pop-corn weave - having adequate length
to fold over at the top of the calf and conceal any elastic band with flashes.

Taking these two things into consideration then "bright" white hose with no cover for the flashes
would not be the ideal situation.

White hose/sox show dirt and discoloration very easily - not an exemplary display.

The type of shoe or boot worn plays apart in sox selection - wearing thick sox with a basic loafer
style shoe maybe liken on the extreme side to looking like a hockey goalie with oversize leg pads.

There are casual kilt sox wearing and the more formal with flashes and brogues shoes with the
lacing wrapping around the sox and tying off at mid calf.

A lot depends on what is the occasion "Kilt Casual" or "Kilt Formal".
With Kilt Casual almost anything goes Kilt Formal is more attention detailed suitable for weddings and funerals.
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Very good and comprehensive explanation, RM.

Returning from the one and only wedding attended kilted up, I went on a photo rampage around the grounds and this is just one of many such shots, but it illustrates your white knee socks with flashes quite well. A niece married a Campbell. She could have done worse....

Nowadays for casual wear I tend to go for black knee socks....less bulk & lighter in an airline-friendly bag.

That one turned out to be a spammer so was permanently disabled and reported to our upstream anti-spam folks.
