I really like the look of the 5.11 kilt but it's not very easy to get one as they are only available for a brief period each year. Is there another brand that is just as good, or maybe better, that is more readily available?

The 5.11 kilt usually becomes available in April, so keep checking their Web site. Or sometimes you can find them on eBay.

Otherwise, look around etsy.com or even Amazon.com for utility kilts in general.

I have three utility kilts from www.utkilts.com that I've worn for several years. These are cheap foreign knock-offs but they're, uh, cheap, and they're serviceable, and they're a great way to get started.

My favorite is www.altkilt.com for their style, flexibility, and construction but, being custom-sewn one-by-one in America,they're definitely pricier. I usually buy on sale but even then they're $175 and up. I feel these are my dressier kilts and don't risk them for rough work or hiking.

Not listed in 5.11 Australia either, not that I would but one, reasonably priced a bit long for my likes.

I had ordered 2 kilts from 5.11 last weekend before I went on a backpacking trip and they should be shipped here in a few days

Yes. Usual for kilts - measure true waist at navel and use that.

I just ordered 2 more 5.11 kilts. I think that a kilt will be better for my image as a biker as opposed to a skirt.

As a regular Kilt wearer with a variety of casual Sport and formal my comments:

The rule of thumb:
For the formal kilt the waist is determined at the navel and not down around the hips.
Often the seller or maker of the kilt will state - NOT YOUR PANTS WAIST !
The formal length will vary with height of the individual - When kneeling the length
of the kilt for 6 foot (72 inches-183 cm) bloke will be 24 inches +/- measured from
the navel to the knee on a flat surface. For regimental i.e. pipe band everyone must
be in uniform length and detail. For a wedding a rental kilt is what it is don't fret !

For the casual or Sport kilt wearer the waist will be whatever you are comfortable with
HOWEVER do not wear your kilt at the HIPS without a belt securing it at that point -
"London bridges falling down" ! The length for the casual or Sport kilt will be north of
the knee shorter for more athletic events and for the fair lass even more short - what
did you expect ? Even if milady wears a kilt it still is a man's skirt and I frequently
wear a 16 inch length mini-kilt. The shorter the kilt the more skirt protocol must be
observed. Kilt fastening about the waist the formal kilt will have (leather) straps at
the waist to snug the garment to the body. Casual or Sport kilts may have those straps
but more commonly now is the Velcro closing and even better when the back of the
waist has an elastic cinching for comfort and security.

So unless you are being knighted by the Queen forget the rule of thumb and just
be yourself casual - wear the kilt comfortably with whatever material it is made out of !

Living in the UK, I have found the '5 yard casual' kilts from either Heritage of Scotland or Buyakilt are ideal for just that, and priced at around £30.
Available in a range of waist sizes, but all of around 24" length, and made from 10 oz polyviscose, so they are not too warm if we should get a warm(ish) day. For cooler days, it's amazing what effect the traditional kilt hose has.
If you want something with a bit more 'swing', then the 8 yard version is available for around £50.
Of course, neither of these compare with a fully tailored kilt, but then, the price doesn't either!!

Well I finally got my 5.11 kilt. It's a bit different from other kilts. I like the material, the quality, and especially the pockets. What I don't like is the pleating and the overlap in the front. It's pleated on the sides but not much on the back. It's a little easier to sit when you don't have to worry about the pleats, but there is not enough excess material to easily cover the area between your legs. I do like the kilt and I will wear it, but it's still not the perfect utility kilt.
