Cotton kilt hose
Cotton kilt hose
I have a nice lightweight kilt which unusually is the same material and weight as a typical skirt (but is tartan to not be confused by the casual observer so feels good in both ways), but I can't find any socks other than thick, itchy wool which can scarcely be justified in warmer weather. Does anyone know any cotton or similar light/non itchy socks? If all else fails I could wear girls over the knee socks (in plain style of course) and turn down the tops but would like to avoid that if possible. I don't mind wearing ankle socks out of winter but it can look a bit funny.

Here is a thought - go to sports athletic store and look for soccer sox
or womens field hockey/lacrosse sox.
These can be had in a variety of colors and are over the calf design
falling just below the knee.
Sports athletic stores: Sports Authority (formerly Sportmart) - Dicks.
Also try ebay - lots of stuff to filter thru.
Caution remember that if buying something sized for a women - a
womens size 11 is equal or the same thing as a mens 9.5 and if you
are in a mens size 10.5 or larger then most of the womens sox and
hosiery will be a problem unless it is really stretchy.
I have had good luck on ebay - consider buying a half dozen from a
textile manufacturer. Some even have outlet sales.

Another plug for Sock Dreams. www.sockdreams.com - click on knee-highs on the left sidebar and you'll find tons that'll work with a kilt or skirt.

Cotton or Nylon long Kilt Hosiery
I have found cotton hosiery very difficult to find here in the UK. But looking through websites it seems the US has the same problems. Long cotton socks just don't exist, and as for over the knee socks, non existent; neither from specialist stocking suppliers nor the established Department stores. John Lewis very disappointing.
I converted a long time ago to stockings, and surprisingly in a pleasant part of North London, my appearance seems accepted by most. I also live just a few miles from the Hasidic Jewish community where on the Sabbath, the senior men wear white stockings under their robes. Their local shop is the only source over here that I have found for US Butterfly brand Nurseaid stockings, which come in an opaque dark brown. The sizing is a bit confusing, and the company is so small they do not have a web site, but they are in NY State.
I eventually found a comfortable suspender belt (garter belt for those in the US) and ok, it all involves a little 'structural engineering', ie shoulder straps to keep it all up, but it is quite comfortable once it is on. Suspenders are fiddly but again it is getting used to them. Being an awkward shape my skirts are usually worn with either matching straps or separate braces. If asked how I keep stockings up, the reply is 'same as a woman'. Nuff said. But not tights (pantyhose) but this is not the forum to discuss in detail. For a man the reason is fairly obvious.
Socks do not stay up, and once you have got used to stockings, which I also wear for medical reasons, they are a very acceptable alternative. Wear very light coloured stockings in good weather, they are hardly noticeable.
If anyone has found good over-the-knee thigh length cotton socks, I would love to know where to get some!

Henri,
Have you ever considered soccer socks?
Modern soccerplayers increasingly opt for over-the-knee wear.
In the pic I added the player in the blue outfit shows what I mean.

Henri, I got some long socks in M&S before Christmas. Not hard to find them at that time of year.
Keep on skirting,

Re: Cotton kilt hose
I bought a pair of these heavy thigh-high cotton socks from American Apparel. I bought mine in black at one of their local retail stores, but they seem to have a dozen or more colors online. I assume they sell/ship to Europe since they have a variety of European languages/currencies available in the drop down at the top of the page where it shows a US flag.
I'm a pretty small guy with slim legs, so these work well for me. If you are bigger/heavier maybe not so much. Read the comments - some people like them and some don't.

I have started, also wearing girl's over knee socks. They are somewhat thinner than regular kilt hose, however they will stay far better up in place.skirted84 wrote: If all else fails I could wear girls over the knee socks (in plain style of course) and turn down the tops but would like to avoid that if possible.
Only kilt wearers might recognize the difference. And how often do you meet another kilt wearer?

Down here in Oz there are women's knee high stockings in lots of different weights and colors.
They work just fine and I don't think anyone could tell the difference

There are stores in the UK, yes, albeit a bit pricey.skirted_in_SF wrote:I bought a pair of these heavy thigh-high cotton socks from American Apparel. Re: Cotton kilt hose
You are lucky if you can wear (fit into) the clothing by American Apparel.
This store caters to the young misses (think junior sizing) and for the
well proportioned adult male there just ain't enough stretch to make it work.
I think 'Twiggy' was their first customer ! LOL.

Re: Cotton kilt hose
Like I said, I'm a small guy - 5'9" (~1.75 meters according to my bilingual tape ) and about 140 pounds (60+ kg).
This may be why I don't wear out as much as I might. I'm not exactly physically imposing if someone decides to challenge my choice in clothing.
