Very good for Mr Styles, it can only be good for our cause.
Worrying part is some reaction from the American Right.
They are calling gender fluidity a socialist left wing plot to feminise men.
According to what I read America needs strong masculine men right now.
I presume that an itchy trigger finger would be a critical qualification.
From this side of the pond, I have no idea of the scale of influence in such reports but the concept alone is scary enough.
What next, Gas Chambers?
Steve,

My item about "Comments on Ben Shapiro for "masculinity" tweets" has a link to a thorough 11 min discussion about this.

They complain about everything, and everything is a socialist plot to them.

The Telegraph. Wow! That's a pretty conservative paper with some extremely conservative readers.

I particularly find this quote in the Vogue article https://www.vogue.com/article/harry-sty ... ember-2020 interesting.
“And he’s a big inspiration to a younger generation—about how you can be in a totally free playground when you feel comfortable. I think that he’s a revolutionary.”
This is the kind of stuff that leads to young people adopting something new. It was this kind of thing that led to men wearing earrings.

I especially like his attitude as indicated by this quote,
When you take away ‘There’s clothes for men and there’s clothes for women,’ once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play. I’ll go in shops sometimes, and I just find myself looking at the women’s clothes thinking they’re amazing. It’s like anything—anytime you’re putting barriers up in your own life, you’re just limiting yourself. There’s so much joy to be had in playing with clothes.
When I first started wearing skirts, that was exactly the same thought I had.

I thought the article, as well as Mr. Styles' attitude is a very positive development for the furtherance of men in skirts. While I tend towards more "masculine" skirt designs for myself, I thought this was a win overall. I don't expect many men to try these particular looks, but perhaps some men will say to themselves, "if he can do that, maybe I can wear ______."

Interestingly, I actually came across this from seeing some "conservatives" reacting against it, including some I admire, prior to seeing it here, and posted defending it.

It absolutely will encourage more men to try skirts. The next big shift needs to be a major fashion retailer deciding to stop selling clothing as gendered. Not difficult but it would be a very positive step.

Is that what people want? I think people like seeing their differences from the opposite sex. It’s comfortable and familiar. Even though we like to say that you can always tell a man apart from a woman no matter the clothes, there is that initial impression our minds make when they see a certain shape/form. I think there still is a strong desire to reinforce masculine/feminine attributes.

From the article:
Harry Lambert, the singer's stylist, told Vogue that the look was "about taking traditionally feminine elements like the frills, heeled boots, sheer fabric, and the pearl earring, but then rephrasing them as masculine pieces set against the high-waisted tailored trousers and his tattoos."
Also, consider that men are not raised with fashion in mind - look how hard it is for some of us who *want* to look “good” but have trouble coordinating things.

The article talks about his stylist - think about that for a moment. I found some of the looks unappealing - but they were tasteful. You start looking at regular men on Instagram who flaunt fashion norms and sometimes it’s a train wreck. Men without stylists. Women have years of experience trying different things, a mother/sister/aunt to guide her.

Just some random thoughts - my solution to this problem is simple - designers need to design skirted outfit themes for men to follow. We can break that mold as it opens the door and makes a skirt more acceptable. But the themes have to be realistic - no shirtless macho men need apply :P

coder, if people want to see differences between the sexes then men should wear skirts because fewer women wear them nowadays. Something that has been remarked upon. More women wear jeans and trousers than dresses/skirts. So your argument here doesn't really convince. Sorry, but I think that the skirt really is a garment that can be worn convincingly by anyone.

As for stylists, who needs them? They certainly don't do much for women who can wear train wrecks just as easily. Of course sometimes it's just for the shock effect. We're men - we can make our own rules.

Hi Guys
One thing that is a common theme around here is that men wearing skirts is generally a non-event.
Us old stagers will repeat that sentiment ad nauseum to anyone who is understandably nervous about their first steps into the world at large. Let me emphasise that this is generally and absolutely true.
I am sorry to say that I did not read the Telegraph article that Stu referred to but I did get a flavour of it.
"It is not important"!
No matter what we say here about style, attitude and wider acceptance the fact is that me wearing a skirt affects nobody but me and me alone.
Thanks not only to the celebrities like Mr Styles and others but also to a generation who actually recognise the trivial nature of mere clothing, one day, many of our comments and reflections will be rendered quite superfluous.
More importantly the desperately real anxiety that I described at the beginning will finally be consigned to the history books.
I was encouraged to pen this today because I have just had the most sociable of mornings in around eight or so months.
Covid, lockdown and home working has had an effect that is unique by any standard that I know of. However, today I had multiple conversations with a variety of folks. Some I have known for a matter of years and strangers too.
The common denominator was my skirt and the utter lack of any kind of reaction to it that I could perceive at any rate.
IT AINT IMPORTANT
Steve.

I wish MOH would get that message. I think that she still sees it as an aberration , a fetish or something like. I just can't get her to show any interest in articles or programmes involving men and skirts. I know that if only I could get her to accompany myself in a shopping trip she would see for herself the lack of reaction. But if she sees me go out in a skirt say to drop my granddaughter at College then she has an epi. Around the house is fine.
