The Times and Transgender Discrimination

Apologies, I know that I got into a discussion with a fellow SC member on here about The Times but, search as I might, I cannot find the original article.

Anyhow, for completeness, here is the outcome of the employment tribunal of the lady that was the subject of discussion in our previous post (if memory serves me correctly). Just because it wasn't proven, doesn't mean it didn't happen, of course. I think it is very difficult as an individual to win over an employer in situations like this.

Even more difficult, perhaps, to win over an employer (or anyone else for that matter) when one is in fact merely making a lifestyle choice.

(I'm just responding to the article as it emerged for me, not engaging in anything about any previous SC discussion.)

Being transgendered is hardly a lifestyle choice; any more than being brown-eyed instead of blue. Nor did the court regard it as such.

Apparently, when it comes to this issue the United Kingdom is living up to its alternate moniker, Great Britain. As I have said before, in the US, 21 states and the District of Columbia have pretty comprehensive protections for not only those who identify as LGBT, but for other than typical gender expression as well. With that in place, most, if not all, major corporations have adopted HR policies in compliance with those laws so they don't have a crazy-quilt of policies and because they have come to realize that such policies are important to the upcoming generation and that they allow people to bring their whole selves. to work.

That said, all of us Yankee MIS will sleep easier if we can get the Senate to pass the Equality Act and get POTUS* to sign it into federal law.

* As per your suggestion Al. Good idea.

Forget Trump. His dementia is getting worse, and his severe and disabling personality disorder
is never going to change. The only thing to do is work for his prompt removal from office.
As for the Senate, as long as toadies and lackeys are in charge, don't look for any useful actions.

To Bertino56 -
[Mod Hat On]
Comments, like yours above, are what required "locking" of threads.
Dave made a comment and listed, procedurally, what needs to take place.
He was not commenting on political views, which - by your comments -
you're turning this thread into. Would you have responded the same way
if Dave had written "the POTUS" instead of using a person's name :?:

Don't force the locking of this thread - PLEASE :!:

I was offended by Bertino56's comment about Trump. So, Uncle Al, I thank you for your posting.

I understand the issue of being transgendered quite well. Before I went on the estrogen regimen about 8 years ago I was suicidal and drank to excess. My wife could not stand my foul temper.

Now I look very much like a genetic woman with a curvy figure (although fighting the Battle of the Bulge in the gut) and get ma'amed a lot. But I still have my bass speaking and singing voice. Most of the time I have only one alcoholic drink a day and seldomly exceed two in a day.

@Uncle Al, I respect your remarks as mod.
Apologies to JohnH and anyone who was offended.
I'll find a more suitable place to post my political opinions!

That may be so, but being perceived as trans when one is in fact merely making a lifestyle choice, as many MIS are, is a thing too. I wobble between just letting it happen and correcting the notion when it happens to me. As stereotypically feminine as my presentation often is, I neither want to be regarded as anything other than male nor want to become anything but male. I practically had to argue a guy "down" the other day. He was on a high congratulating me for my courage in transitioning and it was either correct his misunderstanding or call EMS to hand him a paper bag to breath into or something. (I swear!)

At my stage in life I could consider myself a transgender woman with a feminine name and preferring feminine pronouns. But I still consider myself a man with my masculine name, John, and prefer masculine pronouns. On the other hand I am not offended when I am ma'amed. I don't care if I am sirred or ma'amed as long as I'm not addressed as "maggot".

Heh, only my closest friends call me "maggot", or "scum" or "dog", or "woman". 8)

Back to the article, it says this person was let go because of down-sizing (the entire office was closed), and the company offered to relocate them to another city. This hardly seems like the stuff of a successful complaint for wrongful termination...

A more recent example of The Times reporting transgender news:  A group of mostly transgender people raised a large sum of money for charity and The Times cut everything about them being transgender from the report.
Grateful to @thetimes for putting me in the paper, but it’s a shame editors chose to excise what I stressed to my sympathetic interviewer - this would not have been possible without help from many, many trans and nonbinary people

As I will continue to tell every journalist who asks about this - both producers were trans; Cleopatra, Brutus, Antonio, Ferdinand, Emilia, Juliet, and many other roles were played by trans and NB people; the chat was constantly saying trans rights...

It’s disappointing but unsurprising that the mainstream British press’ hostility to trans people includes not only printing awful things but also editing out excellent ones
