Software update coming

Post by crfriend »

You've all heard this before, but it's time, once again, to try and actually make this happen.

Last time I fell on my nose (at least I got my sword out of the way!) when I tried this, but this time I've actually done my homework and prototyped the change on my systems at home [0], and it worked (as far as I can tell).

So, this coming Sunday, at 13:00 Zulu (08:00 EST), or thereabouts, I'll be taking the forum off-line for a bit whilst I update the undergirding software. I anticipate the change to take less than 15 minutes (it took about that on early 1990s era kit at home), so it ought to be short and reasonably painless. However. Murphy does adore all things computational, so just be advised that there may be an overt outage in the offing. Countermeasures are being developed just in case.

----------------

[0] Yes, I have a full image of SkirtCafe running in my lab at home. It took three tries to actually test the upgrade because it completely exhausted all the resources my machines had at hand. Now, before folks comment disparagingly on this, I am one of those odd folks who actually "practise what they preach", and this goes for my computational bits (see my signature for details).

There is this Geico commercial on TV quote "Well Good Luck getting that to work"!
And remember "Nothing can go Wrong...Wrrong...Wrrroong...Wrrrrooonng...Wrrrrroooonnngg...Wrrrrrrooooonnnnggg" !!!!!
Hope you have a warm boot handy - A size 12 motorcycle boot with steel toe.
And last not least don't do like that guy in Wisconsin - use the 12 gauge satisfaction guaranteed tool on TV censorship!

On another note "Trust Me"!
This will work - won't it"?

Now that I have primed the pump with all that good cheer - just go ahead and throw that switch! See what happens!
I dare you!

And on Sunday I will tell you - I told you so!

And don't call me "Shirley"!

I hope you find all this amusing at least you will now know what to do with that sword that keeps getting in the way.

"I-will-go-skirted-but-not-quietly!"
rm
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

R.M. Shirley you must be joking!

I know there is nothing wrong with those items, they were made by a friend of mine. He never makes mistakes.

I want to open a bank so I can get the Gov to buy me out for 50 million. Gov.: We don't DO that anymore! Me: 40 million???

Thanks, lads. I feel so much better now....

Seriously, I prototyped this at home -- and managed to almost push my gear over the edge in the process. If it took about 15 minutes on a 500 MHz SPARC system with fairly slow disks, it'll go quite a lot faster on the sort of iron at the hosting facility. Which usually means one just gets into trouble quicker than one expects.

And to think that this is how my trusted lieutenant treats me. I tell you, I don't get no respect around here! (OK, so it's been said.)

At least he's not my second in a duel. ;)

I think I read that John
Wayne G. would say "Trust me, I know what I'm doing" to his young friends when he was asking them to help him in his clown act. "Here, drink all this glass of Bourbon and meet me downstairs in my special bedroom". We're gonna have fuuunnn...

Let me get this straight. Is Mr. Fraser trying to equate a sexually-deviant mass-murderer with SkirtCafe's administrator? If so, that is entirely unwelcome behaviour and may result in sanctions.

The phrase, "Trust me, I know what I'm doing" has been a comic foil for ages and usually indicates an upcoming debacle where the character who uttered the line frequently makes a fool of himself.

Update Complete

Post by crfriend »

Fortune favours the prepared, and I'm glad I did my homework this time. The deed is done and we're back on the air.

For those who are curious, the entire process from hitting "submit" on "Disable Forum" (to keep folks from posting anything during the process) to re-enabling it at the end of the process was less than five -- FIVE -- minutes. :ugeek:

We're now on the latest version of phpBB (3.0.8, up from 3.0.0) which gives much greater control over the environment, especially when it comes to robotic spammers and general security. As an administrator, I view this as a blessing.

Thank you, kind sir.

I have to admit, though, that it went surprisingly well. Which, of course, means that there may be gremlins lurking in the shadows someplace.
