Crfriend, is that hat a cousin to the Harry Potter Sorting Hat???     :D
I always pictured it as one of those WW1 German helmets, you know, the ones with the spearpoint spike on top!

That was going to be its next incarnation, but it seems my thunder went missing. Not to worry, though, I'll just conjure up something else!

They happen to be quite nice things of interest, and worth quite a bit, as I just happened to see on the telly that other day on a Brittish show where people can bring in things that they have and would want to sell. The better quality items of course. The pikle helm I think it is called, went inro auction and brough up I think about one thousand brittish pounds, which was much more than the low estimate.
A man is the same man in a pair of pants or a skirt. It is only the way people look at him that makes the difference.

I think the term is "pickelhaub" (and I'm sure I managed to mangle the spelling rather badly), and was the cavalryman's helmet; there was a similar one for artillerymen, but that model had a ball atop the helmet instead of a point. I'll leave it up to the reader's imagination as to why.

However it was named, the helmets didn't help them much.  :?
