Winter Solstice again
Winter Solstice again
This 21st December morning dawned mostly clear in Ireland, so the mind-blowing Neolithic construction at Newgrange Co. Meath could once again demonstrate that it was indeed the Solstice day as the shaft of sunlight crept in along the 62-foot narrow passageway to illuminate the stone at the back of the chamber briefly.
What is difficult to comprehend is that the average human lifespan 5000+ years ago was just 29 years. We don't know what language they used, but the successful transmission and handing down of scientific astronomical data is very evident and they deployed the manpower to actually build it and many others then.....and I bet they were all skirted.

Re: Winter Solstice again
Didn't the Egyptians have a similar temple where at one of the solstices the light shown all the way to the extreme interior of a dark corridor ?
And the Aztec and other people design their temple orientation based on the same criteria relative to sun !
What is mankind doing with global warming to alter some of these alinements ?

"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Re: Winter Solstice again
5-6000 years ago was way before the Internet or speedy global travel, so the Egyptians and the Aztecs & the Celts wouldn't have shared their astronomical information, but each arrived at the knowledge themselves independently.
Educated well informed scientific knowledge developed in many far-flung early civilizations, not forgetting the Chinese and Japanese. These societies remained 'closed' for aeons so info. about their early activities and achievements have only relatively recently been accessed by the English-speaking world.
It's also interesting to observe the French cave drawings which at some 15,000 years old comfortably predate almost everything else.
