Elaborate Funeral

Bill died, leaving a will that provided $30,000 for an elaborate funeral. As the last of
the visitors departed the services, his wife, Lynne, turned to her dearest friend, Sue
and said, "Well, I think Bill would be pleased."

"I'm sure you're right," replied Sue, who then lowered her voice and leaned in close.
"How much did this really cost?"

"All of it," said Lynne, "thirty thousand."

"No!" Sue exclaimed. "I mean, it was very nice, but $30,000?"

Lynne replied, "Yes, the funeral was $6,500; I donated $500 to the church and the wake,
food and drinks were another $500. The rest went for the memorial stone"

Sue computed quickly and asked, "$22,500 for a memorial stone?
My goodness, how big is it?"

"Two and a half carats", Lynne replied.

Yes Fred, we're paying about that in £ sterling. IIRC when I started driving in 1973 petrol was about 40p per gallon.

I'm pulling rank here. I bought my very own first car in 1966 (Triumph Vitesse 1600, Reg. KLU 411D) and petrol could be had for five shillings a gallon imperial. Pre-decimal money meant that at that price you could tank four gallons for a pound. Later that year I drove it to Turkey & back and didn't even think about the cost of fuel.

Yes, Tom.
I can remember 'Super' at 4/11d a gallon, and 'Supreme' at 5/01/2d. (Probably 1963/64ish) This was before petrol was 'star' rated, but the grades would have equated to 4 and 5 star.
By the time I was old enough to be driving (1966), I think even the 'Super' had crossed the 5/- barrier, so it was 3 gallons and change from a £1 note.

(For those who only know decimal coinage, 5/- is equivalent to 25p.)

Decimalisation was 1971 and I started driving at the back end of that year so petrol was all in the new money. I bow to you geriatrics! :D

A first for me today -- a $50 bill for filling the tank in my little steed. Twas $4.30 plus per gallon. On top of $180 for replacing a tyre that blew yesterday afternoon on the way to dinner...

Carl,
Rejoice in your still 'cheap' fuel prices. Tyres are expensive everywhere, but good ones are essential. While the brakes stop the wheels, it's the tyres that stop the car!
