Of Bullsh!t and what comes of it

Post by crfriend »

I got a hoot out of a quote that a buddy of mine pointed me to today that reminded me of precisely what we're up against as a society:
Alberto Brandolini wrote:The amount of energy needed to refute bullsh!t is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.
Also known as "The Bullsh!t Asymmetry Principle".

This, perhaps, explains why the moderation staff have been having "difficulties" with some threads in the past few days...

The question is only who decides what is to be considered as BS. Prejudice can't be considered a guideline.

Wilful ignorance cannot be used (usefully) for guidance, either.

Frustrations shouldn't be vented of here.

As said by Daved Erberhard during his TED talk on Secrurity Junk Syndrome referring to the book: "The basic laws of stupidity":
Stupidity is everywhere, irrespective of education, IQ and academic titles.

As I suggested earlier per PM, delete this thread and keep your hurt feelings to yourself.
And to quote the master barista moderator: ENOUGH!

I'm posting this as a Cafe' member - not in a moderator capacity............

Everyone is entitled to "Vent" frustrations. Sometimes it is done
in a place where people can relate to what's going on. Skirt Cafe'
IS ONE OF THOSE PLACES where on-line friends can meet and share
those experiences. We've all been there.

IF you don't like a thread, DON'T COMMENT ON THE THREAD :!:

However, YOUR comment was out-of-line.

The original post was in the context of what gave the writer a humorous thought.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ INTO A POST, STUFF THAT WASN'T SAID(written).
Your post showed you took the original post "out-of-context".

On MY B.S. METER(on a scale of 1-10), your comment ranked a"9".
To add to the fact that I just finished documents for my wife's funeral
arrangements(she hasn't passed yet), THAT IS A FRUSTRATING EXPERIENCE :!:

Have I told anyone yet :?: Only my kids, which they were a part of the process.

So, IF you're going to post something, PREVIEW it, re-read it and ask
yourself - is this what I really want to say(write) :?:

UA,

First of all, all the courage you will be needing in the time coming.

As to the subect of venting ones opinion, I have experienced recently that opinions were qualified as bogus on subjective grounds. Ergo, a contradictio in termini as to what you are stating now. I indicated that the openmindedness was lacking.

Imho a subject as BS is not fitting. Now again I have the feeling you are playing the big brother for CrF.
But I do know when to take a que and will contemplate leaving this forum.

Gusto10, whilst we don't want you to leave the forum your posts have been contentious of late. Not sure how you have managed to take offense on a post that was done with humour which was how I read it. I don't even think that Carl was venting any frustrations but passing on something that he had been told. The statement about BS is as true for any falsehoods and conspiracy theories that are being spread at the moment. In fact I would say that it is more than one order of magnitude but several since the quantity of output of falsehoods tends to increase exponentially through repetition rather than original research. Sorry, Gusto10 but I entirely agree with what UA said.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

I'm not suggesting you leave the forum.

I'm suggesting not to be hyper-critical of what someone writes.

Any and all input is welcome but try to keep it in the context
of the original post.

This is a read-only forum. A member can not see any visual expressions
by the writer. Something could be said(written) in a sarcastic manor yet
the scarcasm 'visual clues' are missing. You know, a wink of the eye,
a mischievous grin etc., are missing with the written word.

I could tell the O.P. was writing in a humorous mode by the style of writing.
Of course, I've known his writing style for many years and take some things
with a grain of salt. I can tell when he's had an 'off day' as well as a 'good day'.

@ sinned, thank you. I do want to point out that I did do my own research as I have always done and always used the system check, check, double check. If my gutfeeling would indicate that something wasn't correct I would leave it out or mention it with my own questions therewith. I opted for leaving those out.

UA,

Maybe so that it should have been considered as horsing around, but I persist that such a subject with such a lousy timing should not have been incepted at this very moment.

Hence I do think that this thread and same as has been asked by others, the thread on rethinking lingerie, as that subject always has been a no-no, should be locked as of this minute.

Alright, since nobody is paying attention here I'll spell it out clearly.

Conspiracy theory, misinformation, and disinformation on the current public health matter will no longer be tolerated. Full stop.

Idle speculation on assorted conspiracy theories like the faked moon landings, the Illuminati, the third shooter on the grassy knoll, and the Trilateral Commission are fine because added "information" on those harms no-one. However, FUD and misinformation on a very real public health issue can and does harm people, including innocent people who are trying to figure out what to do in a complex and dynamic environment.

If it merely concerned the dis- and non-believers in science I'd be just fine for letting Uncle Chuck sort it out. Unfortunately that's not the case. This is an infectious disease, is (now) highly contagious, and can have devastating effects on some. If it kills you (and that is the generic "you") because you're uncertain, then so what. Natural laws have no pity. However, what you (again the generic) do in this case does affect those around you -- including the ones that have been vaccinated. Bluntly, I'd like to see some level of liability placed on the non- and dis-believers such that they would be held liable for the medical bills (either private debt as in the US or to society in countries with developed health care systems) of those they infected.

We're all in this together, and we need to pull together. Sadly, it may now be too late -- an opportunity lost. And it does not matter whether this was a lab escape, by design, or divine intervention -- we need to deal with it. The longer the issue festers, the worse it will become because that's the way viruses can work.
