Ah, but sacred cows make the best burgers !

Serves 'em right, those toasted Texans, to get a taste of what the rest of us put up with every year.

Thanks Tom but I don't need any more COLD :!:
Our high temp today as 18*F. Our "Normal High" is 61*F
Our low temp was -4*F and our "Normal Low" is 40*F.
The record low was -8*F set in 1899.
So far, we haven't lost electrical power. I can't move my
wife, who is bedridden, into the living room where the
fireplace is located.

A few days ago, there was a light ice storm. It resulted in
a 133 vehicle pile-up and 8 fatalities. The road workers
were aware of the potential ice build up but didn't get out
sanding the roads until it was too late.

The electric generating plants are not set up to handle this
extreme cold. Many froze up - solid. Clean water plants
had frozen valves, and stopped filtering the drinking water.
North Ft. Worth is under a "Boil Water" requirement and some
areas are without water.

Texas has over 8 million customers without electricity.
The city of Houston has 45% of customers WITH power.
I'm hoping the coming ice storm bypasses my area, I have
to keep my wife warm.

I can handle the snow, but the ice is a major problem for
roads and, especially, power lines.

Here are some examples of what Wind Chill can do to exposed
or unprotected/insulated skin.

Hi Uncle Al,

Yes, those temps. are horrendous and of the sort we've never experienced here. I do hope you get some respite very soon.

You illustrate frostbite. In a recent video-interview Sir Runolf Feinnes, Arctic explorer showed us his hands which both have lost many terminal digits to frostbite and look ghastly. The guy's barking mad, of course, exposing himself totally unnecessarily to those conditions. He of all people ought to have known better. A sort of adventure martyrdom, I expect.

Funny, I just finished a cold beef sandwich (well, silverside) just before seeing this post.
Those temperatures aren't funny though. I hope it passes quickly for you.

Frostbite is very painful - I got a touch of it on the end of my thumbs in my youth, in Alice Springs of all places, riding home late at night on a motorcycle at -3C, it was the wind chill.

I'm use to very cold temps. I have worked out side in -25F -31C temps. Wind chill can creep up on you fast,
As for home i have backup generator. Learned long time ago that at any given time the lights can go out, My house was one of the only ones with lights on back in 2003 black out, Back then i had small portable generator that i would take to racetrack and used that to give some power to the house, Now i have enough power to run full house and run cords to help my neighbors out.
