It's early days but if, as Carl says [0], the money moves away from the support of political figures then they could find themselves unemployed [1] in two year's time. Already Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and Citigroup have started off in this vein. Early days 2, when somebody becomes toxic to the powers up there investigations have a tendency to find all sorts of skeletons in cupboards and the support of the power base will make him a social pariah where it matters and his influence will fail. Either that or you are ripe for a full civil war and you can guess where Trump will be leading his insurrection from? Argentina, Mexico or Venezuela for example, and he'll be on the opposite side of the wall he has been carefully building. Maybe that's why he wants to suddenly go and visit it, so he can slip over the border. I wonder what the extradition treaties are like with those south?

[0] follow the money
[1] People at the rank in both houses don't become unemployed - they either have enough money not to worry or they move to other public offices or executive directorships which could be mainly symbolic but drawing unemployment benefit would certainly not be a likely scenario. It happens over here all the time, is entirely unremarkable and not even news. It's not what you know but who you know.

Here's another quote -- and this one may give you hope for the future.  It was copied from one of the BBC Yearbooks from a long time ago and has only been slightly edited to disguise the person it was originally written about.
His theory of propaganda, as expounded with such a wealth of detail and such disregard for grammar, is already well known in this country. His purpose has been to create a mass of uniform and unthinking opinion completely subservient to his dictatorship. His avowed method is to appeal to the lowest instincts in human nature, namely to envy, malice, greed, fear, and conceit. He addresses himself not to the civilized mind of the nation but to its primitive, and often unconscious, emotions. He seeks from these emotions to create a nucleus of inflamed sentiment which can be lashed to fever-point, now from this direction and now from that, and which in itself precludes the critical or even the rational frame of mind. He aims at constantly maintaining this high temperature of sentiment by the use of symbols and bogies, and by the constant provision of some new excitement or some new hatred. He employs repetition, exaggeration, emphasis, and the distortion of reality as deliberate weapons wherewith to stun and shatter the intelligence of the people. He mouths fantastic promises, yells out imaginary threats, screams and weeps over fictitious grievances. He forces the whole people to identify their own fears and hopes and passions with the personality of their leader so that their leader becomes for them the embodiment of the national consciousness and thus - however inconsistent his pronouncements, however wild his ambitions, however dangerous his adventures - the repository of the national will. By these methods an extreme condition of mass-hallucination is attained ; the nation's energy and expectancy are tuned to so hysterical a pitch that the fine quality of self-sacrifice is distorted and disordered until it flickers on the edge of suicidal mania. There are people, even in this country, who have been so impressed by the effects of this herd hysteria, by the actual efficiency with which he has carried out his own plan of forcing the people not to think, that they forget to examine the very serious disadvantages which this method entails. His method is bound to fail in the end, since it is based upon the fundamental fallacy that the actions of mankind are invariably and permanently determined by their lower and not by their higher instincts. In taking as the type of average human being the very low individuals with whom he had himself consorted, he ignored the indisputable fact that in the end it is the virtues and not the vices of the human race which prevail. He believes, evidently, that he can continue for ever pandering to the greed, the vanity, the self-interest, or the cowardice of his fellow mortals. Indubitably he has succeeded within a limited area and for a limited time. But he has aroused in the world such a tide of antagonism as has faced him with a retribution which he will not be able to escape, since cynicism is an uncreative state of mind
There is no such thing as a normal person, only someone you don't know very well yet.

"censorship" As the term is defined it only apples to the government trying to silence you. Ronald Reagan's FCC abolished the fairness doctrine so a broadcaster is under no obligation to give either side of a controversy.

Social norms aren't changed by Congress or Parliament; they're changed by a sufficient number of people ignoring the existing ones and publicly practicing new ones.

So Trump is thinking of forming his own Patriot Party. Republicans are now in a tight spot. If they convict him ( and now they have little reason to be loyal to him as he's just about to jettison them anyway ) then he forms a new party and splits the GOP base. But if they don't convict him then the GOP becomes the Trump Fascist Party in all but name forever ( he has progeny that would want to continue his legacy ). Interesting. I wonder what they will do.

Also interesting is an article that I read that said that it would be difficult to prosecute Capitol rioters without prosecuting Trump because the rioters were only obeying their president's orders. And in support of this two of the rioters pleaded for Trump to pardon them as they said they were just doing what he asked - to march on the Capitol and prevent the election being verified. But the catch is that if they were pardoned then by assumption a crime has been committed. Catch 22.

Also interesting is that Trump is having difficulty getting people to attend his farewell do. Many, including detractors and critics of his time in office, have been rushing to declare their declinations.

That's actually the worst thing he could do, and further evidence that he either a) has been working for the democrats this whole time or b) underscores his extreme narcissism.

To explain possibility a), forming a "Trump [Patriot] party" would split the current GOP right down the middle. The GOP would never win another presidency again, nor would the Patriot Party or any other conservative party. Conservatives would be to fractured against a united Democratic party. In fact, the Trump party may even win a few electoral votes, but that would always serve keep the GOP under the coveted 270.

I'm reserving comment on this until after Biden is sworn in. I'd say something now but I don't want to eat crow (Trump still has 5 hours to pardon the lot)... stay tuned...

I think the answer here is "b". He was working solely for Himself, so the notion that He was "working for the Democrats" is rather silly on the face of it.

If He (or his minions) manages to form a "Patriot Party" it will be the death-knell for the classical Republican Party, and about all that can be said about that is, 'Good." because it hasn't represented anybody in the working classes since the Eisenhower administration. It'll also be an hilarious redefinition of the term "patriot" because there is no way that the characters involved are even close to being patriots as they have no loyalty to the Constitution nor law (or even decency).

Back in 2015 and 2016 when a Trump presidency started looking believable, one of my pals speculated that, "It looks like the Republican Party has completely lost control." In recalling that a few weeks ago it actually makes quite a lot of sense. The problem is, however, that the massive lurch to the right in the 1980s took all the politicians with it including the Democrats who should have known better. It's only the "Progressive wing" of the modern Democratic Party that looks anything like classical Democrats; the rest of them look like classical Republicans (which even in the 1970s carried a faint whiff of sleaze with it).

The trick now is to see if the Biden presidency will follow through with anything the Progressives are looking for, or whether it'll toe the line that the fat-cats will demand. I know where my money is on that bet.

If He is stupid enough to do that it'll forever cement His place as the worst president the country has ever seen. There's also the legal question of whether accepting a pardon can serve as an admission of guilt -- and potentially be chargeable, albeit in this case at a state level as the pardon would exempt the pardoned one from federal prosecution. Also, pardoning a mass all at once may prove a slippery problem as well, and could well draw court challenges.

With all those masks worn - hard to see any emotion - at least I did not see any eyes rolling - eyebrows twitching.

All in all a very smooth inaugural ceremony - only critic the moment of swearing in of President Biden did not occur exactly at HIGH NOON !
It actually was a few minutes before - good to give Pres Joe a head start - he sure as hell will need it - and all those prayers too !
Shame that this event could not be shared more with a live audience - TV coverage was as good as it could get - cameras just about everywhere.

The weather co-operated too - one amusing introductory comment from the Missouri senator about the Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar and
the appropriateness of the falling snow flakes at the start of the event (her presidential nomination program started in a Minnesota blizzard).

Now onward to the business at hand to be commenced - - - - - forthwith - so many things - the Covid virus - economy - acts to protect humanity !

Changing the direction of the ship of state - draining the bilge will occur later after the new Captain sets a corrective course of recovery !

God Bless the United States of American - Amen !
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

I started feeling a little bit better about things somewhere around 13:00 Eastern after enough time had elapsed that it was clear that birds hadn't flown. I suspect that if Little Donnie had tried a launch that the military would have ignored him, but one never knows.

With it now slightly after 14:00, we're likely entirely out of the woods. Now it'll be back to business as it was in the final 8 years of Cheney/Dubya unless the progressive wing of the Democratic Party can actually gain some footing..

Well, best of luck to President Biden and Vice President Harris. They've certainly got their work cut out for them.

Better off seeing it on tele like major sorting events. Maybe you miss the atmosphere but you get a better all round view.

I did see a spoof copy of the note that Trump left for Pres Biden which read, "By the way, the codes don't work. I tried!"

Apparently he was still signing pardons on AF1. I also see that there has been a distinct lack of belief now in QAnon as the "Storm" never materialised. Advocates will have to find something else to believe in.

Dennis,

As promised:

So much faith and stock was put in his name, he spoke and people listened. To some, he was the devil, to others he was a living god. For years he maintained his influence and power by denouncing the enemies of the land, the socialist, the communist, and those who would call themselves the liberals and the Democrats. He was to save this land from all those who would seek to bring about the end of all that his followers hold dear.

And so it was, that on the 6th of January 2021, that he would make his last stand. He would stand tall, proud, and speak with grand authority. Raising his fist, he declared to the hundreds of thousands in his flock, and the millions across the land, that this, and this alone was the moment of truth, the moment of justice, the moment of reckoning. Like the many great leaders of humanity of years gone by, he vowed "I will walk with you!" as he rallied his people to take their great nation back from the pedophile communist who rigged the latest election in a last ditch effort to overthrow the nation.

For this was the midnight hour for the great nation of America, and he rallied his newly formed army on their patriotic and faithful march to seize back what had been wrongfully stolen from them in November. He commanded them to march, and march they did. By the tens of thousands, they stormed the capitol building under the common belief that those lawmakers who were certifying an illegitimate election were the treasonous traitors that at this moment, were the nation's largest threat.

But their leader was nowhere to be found, having turned as the army moved in the opposite direction, their leader would find refuge in the comfort and safety of his own home. Shortly thereafter, the army seized the capitol of the nation, and called for the traitors' heads on a pike. Doors and windows smashed in, a handful of people would meet their death, scores more injured, all for the sake of this man and his legacy.

After being graciously welcomed into the nation's capitol building by those who were sworn to protect it, one of the President's closest allies, the Vice President, had decided that he had had enough, and made a call for the National Guard to secure the building, and shortly thereafter, Trump's army was ejected from the premises.

Full of pride for the feat they have accomplished, they bragged and boasted, they shared their stories and their photos for all the world to see. "Look what great things we have done!" However, behind the scenes, rebuke was swift, and many of the President's closest allies in the congress of the people, with new threats on their own lives, realized where Mr. Trump's loyalty truly lied, with himself, and called on accountability from the President and his militia. Within hours, the leader of the militia, President Trump himself broadcasted a scripted speech nationally denouncing the violence, and distancing himself from the forces he crafted.

Over the next few days, these forces would return to their homes across the fifty states, vexed somewhat by their leader's sudden about face, but proud nevertheless as they knew deep down Mr. Trump was still on their side, and Mr. Trump would make everything right.

As the fortnight between the certification and the inauguration dragged on, Federal Agents began to locate and arrest the various agitators, many of whom were sure that in their greatest moment of need, with the real possibility of serving prison time and their liberty in jeopardy, surely, their leader would pardon them. "Why not?" They wondered... he has the authority. The stood and shouted "We did this for YOU! PARDON US!"

Yet that pardon never came. As to the reason why, we can only speculate. Some believe that Mr. Trump's advisors recommended against such a pardon, as it may further serve to indict the President himself. While this is certainly possible, it is this writers opinion, that the true reason would likely be, that Mr. Trump is just as asshole.

And so, on January 20th, the nation turns the page. The uprising being defeated, and American democracy survives its worst attack in generations. Where do we go from here? The jury remains out. But we can take one lesson from this experience,

NEVER lay your life and freedom on the line for a man. It is honorable and virtuous to do so for an ideal, or something you believe in, but NEVER for a man. While that man walks free, several lie dead, others in prison cells. Your efforts were in vain, our nation, The United States of America, the constitution, and principles this nation were founded on were stronger than you, and your fascist leader.

Never forget.

And in the words of Forest Gump, "that's all I have to say about that..."
