A Sincere Request of Help from Those Who Disagree with My Politics

Post by Pdxfashionpioneer »

One of the things I really appreciate about the Skirt Cafe is that by and large the items that are posted here are full-throated, civil and rational. Consequently, I am confident I will get the kind of help regarding public policy issues that I am asking for.

Before I make my ask, I feel some context is called-for.

A number of items that have come out of the recent election strike me as highly significant:
1. In raw numbers, Donald Trump inspired the greatest turnout, for and against, in American history. We also had one of the highest percentages of eligible voters participate.
2. The 4 years since his election has given all Americans of voting age plenty of time to take Trump’s measure.
3. At well over 70 million votes, Mr. Trump garnered the second highest number ever for a US Presidential candidate.
4. Millions of people voted for him despite their disliking his style.
5. Clearly, Donald Trump represents something utterly essential to a large percentage of Americans.

Equally significant are the facts of the outcome. Biden not only garnered 6 million more votes than Trump, he also received the majority of the votes cast. He won at least as many Electoral College votes as Trump did in 2016 and by wider margins. Of the over 3 dozen lawsuits filed by the Trump Campaign or by the Republican Party, all but a very few have been withdrawn or thrown out for lack of evidence. Even if they all had made it to trial and the Republicans had prevailed in every one of them, altogether they would not have changed the outcome. Consequently, I feel I am on firm ground to refer to former Vice President Joseph Biden as the President-elect.

In the President-elect’s Acceptance Speech of November 7, he made a few points that I hope all of us can agree upon:
1. “It’s never a good bet to bet against the United States of America.”
2. “When we’re united, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”
3. So, this is the time to focus on what unites us rather than what divides us.
4. It starts by ending the demonization
5. And by taking the time to listen to the concerns of the folks who voted differently than us.

In that vein I am asking those of you who voted for Donald Trump’s reelection to state, as specifically as you can, why you voted for him. What concerns or policies did you feel Trump stood for that Biden didn’t?

I commit to not responding for 2 weeks (Dec. 14) so you have time to give me a complete and full-throated reply. I just ask that you be as specific as you can and refrain from name-calling. When I reply, I will try to explain how the Democratic platform, as I understand it, addresses the concerns you raise.

I further commit that the concerns you raise that I concur with I will pass along to Congressman Blumenauer and to my Senators Merkley and Wyden as bipartisan concerns. Because they’re concerns of citizens of both parties, they should have a decent chance of legislative action.

Fair enough?

Trump supporters, please start contributing.

To start with I will keep it simple

For the last 4 years the democrats have refused to accept President Trumps election Now us Trump supporters are just supposed to forget this.

Biden mention a stop to the demonization who did all the demonization again just forget what has happened over the last 4 years

Maxine waters called for President Trumps impeachment in November 2016 I think what Biden and his son did is cause for impeachment lets start the process now.

Many democrats did not show up for his inauguration that was a real uniting act.

Basically what the Democrats are asking for is for us Trump supporters to forget all of the crap that they have pulled over the last 4 years and just go along with things.

sorry Dave "IT AINT GOING TO HAPPEN "

Just a reminder of the question.

And note that answers, and the way they are presented, will be read by some fairly intelligent folks so what you write says quite a lot about you.

I've usually felt that I don't have to defend or even reveal how I'm voting. But you asked and it is a sincere request so I will reply.

Note that I've never registered in a political party and I live in a state that therefore doesn't allow me to vote in primaries. Also understand that my state is very blue and therefore my vote for Trump is canceled by the electoral college and therefore strictly symbolic. I considered not voting in 2016 until Trump was nominated and made it interesting.

When Donald Trump ran in 2016, there was something appealing about a business leader who is not a professional politician. I felt that Trump could bring insight to government that we didn't already have. In the primary races, I saw how determined he was and what a fighter he was. Ted Cruz tried every dirty trick to keep him from getting the nomination.

I felt that Trump would do America well- controlling illegal immigration, fighting terrorism, getting us out of bad deals with other countries like the Iraq nuclear deal and climate change. Trump would put up a good fight against socialism, antifa, cancel culture, and what I consider to be other negative and un-American ideas that offend me. Trump moved the Israeli embassy to Jerusalem which previous president of both parties didn't do. I liked a President who was unconventional- communicating directly to America with tweets. Trump was not an a**-kisser and did what he thought was right.

I'll admit I had to overlook a few compelling negatives. I was offended by his comments that he could grab women by the (crude term for female genitals). I didn't like how he handled Charlottsville. His language against the KKK and other white terror groups was delayed and unconvincing.

I was ready for 4 more years of this. Just when I thought Republicans were dinosaurs, Trump brought them
back to life. He said what was on his mind and I loved the transparency.

Many felt he was a racist. I didn't think so. He was for fairness and didn't feel Black Lives Matter properly represents issues important to black people or attempts to solve them. When America was burning and stores and businesses looted, many took it to be an attack on Trump but I took it as the other party not caring about people's safety and right to protect their property. Pre-COVID, black unemployment was at its lowest point ever. Also Trump pledged assistance to HBCUs.

Trump managed to get 20% of the black vote and 33% of the Hispanic vote which I found amazing. The Democrats count on getting their votes, failing to recognize that ethnic groups are not monolithic voting blocs.

COVID was probably the one issue that Trump had difficulty with. He underestimated the impact it would have on the USA and the world. He was overly-optimistic about the pandemic. Having said that, I don't feel he is responsible to 225,000 dead. There is a lot about COVID that even the world's foremost epidemiologists didn't understand. COVID is so new and unprecedented and I don't know if another president could have handled it better.

I felt Trump was qualified to lead this country to where it needed to go, and pledged to uphold the Constitution. He is certainly not a perfect man but who is? I don't know why he was so hated and vilified.

I hope this was what PDX was looking for. I'd like to see other responses from either side.

Brad -
"I hope this was what PDX was looking for. I'd like to see other responses from either side."

I think that PDX was mainly looking for responses of the Trump side of the coin and after
that 14 day hiatus quarantine what ever time of respite would comment from his view point.

Excellent thought provoking discussion starter - I look for more comments - detailed in depth.
Very interesting why people voted for Trump and their reasons and what was of equal
importance the number of voters that turned out to vote.
Being from Minnesota the number "1" state in the nation in voter turn out - in this once
heavily DFL BLUE state very rapidly sliding past into the PURPLE zone and I am not talking
Viking football here. It is awash of RED outside the cities metro area the center of the
George Floyd issue. But both these areas are not far apart in vote totals just like the
rest of the country.

Thankfully this forum fosters and allows discussion exchange of opposing views and - - -
God Bless this United States of America !
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

I'll answer your question WITH a question;

What will Biden be able to do in 4 years as POTUS,
that he hasn't done in the last 47 years he's been in
the Senate :?:

Al, Dan,

Would you be able or willing to come up with a response along the lines of Brad above? I found Brad’s response very interesting, and would like to hear what your responses to the original post would be.

as per the original request some of the things that he accomplished that made me vote for him again

brokered the first meaningful Mideast peace deals. of course the media virtually ignored this

economic policies resulted in the lowest black and Hispanic unemployment

got rid of NAFTA got tough on trade that resulted in benefits to American workers

passed prison reform benefited minorities correcting some of the very same laws that Biden supported

loves the flag and our country non-apologetic patriotism

started wall that helps keep out criminals and drugs

slashed prices on prescription drugs, passed right to try law to allow terminally ill patients to have access to experimental therapies

forced NATO allies to pay their fair share to United Nations

respects cops veterans ICE and all first responders

established relationship with North Korea

made US energy independent and the largest producer of energy in the world

destroyed ISIS killed countless terrorists without going to war

brought troops HOME

save our seas act , wilderness protection and conservation bill

has not sold out America like Biden and Family

brought home over 40 Americans held captive in foreign lands

passed many VA reforms that benefit those who served

What has Biden done in his 47 years of public employment

This is not a complete list but its a good start

A good post, OS1 and I'm sure there's a lot more that could be added to that list.

We're more detached of course on this side of the Pond and there's a village in Co. Clare here, Doolin, where Trump is God (He owns a golf course & hotel there)
But Democracy is where it's at and he should have been more gracious in defeat, my opinion.

He can always have another shot in 2024.

as per the original request some of the things that he accomplished that made me vote for him again

brokered the first meaningful Mideast peace deals
(Part of this deal was between countries who were not at war making a peace deal easy.)

economic policies resulted in the lowest black and Hispanic unemployment
(Presidents often take credit for a strong economy, and Trump fits that mold, touting jobs and stock market numbers regularly.)

got rid of NAFTA got tough on trade that resulted in benefits to American workers
(It will be interesting to see if this causes more people to try and enter into the US. NAFTA was intended to increase wages in Mexico. Without it, we may have more immigration problems.)

passed prison reform benefited minorities correcting some of the very same laws that Biden supported
(I work in prison ministry – I have not seen any improvement – in fact, many prisoners complain that there is nothing happening in prison to help them integrate into society.)

loves the flag and our country non-apologetic patriotism
(We all love the flag. Non-apologetic patriotism is meaningless. Offending other nations through derogatory remarks is not patriotism – it is stupidity.)

started wall that helps keep out criminals and drugs
(President Regan worked to get a wall torn down. Working with other countries to fight crime and drug production would have been a better idea, in my opinion.)

slashed prices on prescription drugs, passed right to try law to allow terminally ill patients to have access to experimental therapies
(Trump was elected in 2016. Check the date on the executive orders. What took him so long? Was it fear of not being re-elected?) (Oh, I haven’t seen a reduction in my costs – yet!)

forced NATO allies to pay their fair share to United Nations
(Fact checks with news agencies dispute this claim.)

respects cops veterans ICE and all first responders
(Please explain why you think this is true. I have not seen anything on this topic pro or con)

established relationship with North Korea
(We have had a relationship with Korea, and it was adversarial. I am not sure that our relationship is any better with N. Korea still working on new rockets and warheads.)

made US energy independent and the largest producer of energy in the world
(This is debatable – we still import a lot of oil.)

destroyed ISIS killed countless terrorists without going to war
(I believe that we were part of a multinational coalition that defeated ISIS.)

brought troops HOME
(This is an ebb and flow situation and far from being over.)

save our seas act , wilderness protection and conservation bill
(And rolled back other protection acts.)

has not sold out America like Biden and Family
(Let’s see some evidence here both ways.)

brought home over 40 Americans held captive in foreign lands
(Gee – that’s 10 per year for a man who leads one of he most powerful nations in the world. And this is a big deal?)

passed many VA reforms that benefit those who served
(Where are they – I as a veteran – have not seen one bit of difference.)

What has Biden done in his 47 years of public employment
(The same as every other professional politician lined his pockets and kept his job. But what are we to do? We look at the issues and vote for whomever we think will get the job done. As for me, I became disillusioned with all the false information that spewed from Donald Trump never mind the disrespectful name calling. This was a big part of why I voted the other way.

This is the great thing about this country. We choose who we vote for and in doing so, we must live with the results of the election.

The truly disturbing topic that I feel needs the most attention is the media. Newspapers, Magazines, Television, ETC. ALL NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT REPORTING FACTS! When media slants the news, they do injustice to all of us and harm to our country.

Obama was in office 2 weeks and was given the peace prize any peace in the Mideast is noteworthy

Enocomic policies he fits the mold because he done it.

Nafta increased wages in MEXICO and what did it do for US

prision reform ask Alice Johnson

patriotism America first Screw the rest of the world

Please don't tell me that you are comparing the wall between the US and Mexico with the Berlin wall

US energy by the way what did you pay for your last fill up

Freed captives sure was a big deal to the prisoners and their families.

If you don't believe that Bidens family profited from his son's dealings with his foreign countries because his father was VP than maybe you should go and sit on the berlin wall

your final comment about media not reporting the facts

Google news
yahoo news
CNN
MSNBC
THE NEW YORK TIMES
FOX NEWS
CNBC
This is a list of most of the major news sources please please rate them as to their political leaning

There is more but that's enough for now

Trump in 2024?

If that is the best the Republican party can do...

Heaven help us all.

(One of the advantages of putting Biden in office
is that there is a good chance he will not live out
his term. I think there should be an upper age limit
as well as a lower age limit for running for office.
But that is a topic for another discussion.)

As it is, I have had my fill of Politics for now and
am moving on other than to state that Poli means
many and Tics are blood sucking creatures. That
pretty well sums up my attitude on this subject.

As for rating the news, I have found that I have been
getting all the news I need from the weather report.
I don't feel that anything beyond that is worth hearing
right now. That means that I rate them all pretty low
as far as reliability, and a blind man riding a horse at
full gallop can see that newscasters lean one way or
the other making our news useless.

Let's leave this to continue on in the original vein. There's a hope that everybody might learn something, and I'd rather see us unite with what we have in common instead of reviling each other because of a few things that divide us.

There is vastly more we have in common than that what divides us, although the division is being fanned and encouraged in order to keep our eyes off where the real action is.

We can all fact-check individually.
