Yes, I think many men would be prepared to make the step to something which might, at a glance, be taken for shorts. I find that when I am looking for a skirt, I tend to favour all those "army surplus" colours which I so dislike being forced towards in standard menswear, because - consiously or otherwise - they keep that visual link to the usual signals for "masculinity".
