Unisex Childrenswear - New Zealand

Post by Stu »

I was looking through a pile of newspapers brought back from Australia and New Zealand by a relative and I spotted an article about a new unisex childrenswear brand called Freedom Kids in New Zealand. Normally, these suppliers claim everything is unisex, but what they really mean is that everything is for girls and some of the garments can be worn by boys. You can tell that's their real agenda by who is modelling the skirts/dresses, but this firm is different. Their choice of models looks to me like when they say everything is unisex, they actually mean it.

Be advised, many young girls have hair styles that boys would typically have. It's really impossible [0] to tell the sex of these type of children as they haven't hit puberty yet.

[0] Obviously not technically "impossible" but the only means will involve a prison sentence.

Today while at the Walmart in Troy Ohio I thought I saw a boy who looked to be wearing a feminine tunic (the child was wearing what looked like leggings under it)

The hair style was very boyish, but I suspect it was actually a girl, as there's no way the community would allow a young boy to go out like that (might get social services called on the parents)

Then again... I'm not in Appalachia at the moment... so who knows?

I think that the child in the image is a girl. Remember-"unisex" means females borrowing from our side of the isle.

Probably the only exception on the radar would be a child who is deemed Trans.

I don't think this is a girl. First, the ones with obvious girls are showing the dress without pants underneath. Also, look at the other pictures of the same child, obviously taken before he/she started losing baby teeth - https://www.freedomkids.co.nz/collectio ... lue-onesie

I just had a look round the site and spotted this page for a skirt: https://www.freedomkids.co.nz/collectio ... hade-skirt

Note where they rider says: "NOTE: THESE WERE CUSTOM-MADE FOR US, BUT IN ERROR THEY WERE LABELLED WITH GIRL' IN THE LABEL TAG. WE FIRMLY BELIEVE THESE ARE FOR KIDS OF ANY GENDER! WE ARE HAPPY TO REMOVE THE LABEL FOR YOU BEFORE WE SEND IT OUT."

I may be wrong, but it looks to me that we finally have a retailer who is practising what they preach. If there is to be any future for males in skirts, we should be applauding any cases in which boys are able to wear skirts as boys (not just as trans girls or boys with gender issues). Our sons and grandsons will thus have equality, and sartorial choices that have been denied to our generation.

I think the feet of that child look like they belong to a boy.
Makes me think of record by the Kinks, Lola. Boys will girls and girls will be boys it's a mixed up muddled up shook up world. At least I think that's how the words go.

I don't want to, as they say, "flog a dead horse, but I thought I'd have another look at the site and spotted this. Is anyone seriously going to suggest that both children in this web page are just girls with short hair? Look at the second one down, and the other one of the same boy just below it - and it is not worn over pants.

This would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. If we get products marketed like this for 7-year-olds, they will eventually be marketed for 12-year-olds, and then teens and finally adults. I may be wrong, but I think if this catches on, it's a major breech in the seemingly impenetrable taboo which prevents males wearing anything but pants.

You're right Stu, that is clearly a boy. Ten out of ten to the retailer.

However I noticed that the male models are young - below school age, whereas some of the girls are clearly a bit older. Getting boys of 3 or 4 to wear skirts or dresses would be great, but will they still be expected to wear grey trousers from the age of 5 to 105? Acceptance of boys' skirts as schoolwear is probably a much harder step.
Keep on skirting,
