Today I had to be fitted for a crown, but it's chilly (40'sF) and VERY windy. Sustained winds in the mid-20's mph. So I wore a midi-length grey winter weight skirt with black tights and a sheer pink blouse. The dental assistant told me she liked the color of my blouse.

As I was checking out and paying my portion of the crown, the other woman at the front desk said that she was disappointed by my outfit. She said she "had been looking forward to (my) coming all day." Like everywhere else, I usually go there in an above the knee skirt, sheer hose and heels. She explained that she enjoyed watching me enter and leave the office so she could check out my legs. Her favorite aspect of my calves are my defined muscles; "Like a bodybuilder's," she said.

This was doubly pleasing to me, first that my legs had made such an impression on her and secondly that despite the fact I wasn't wearing a single stitch of menswear, she saw me in such a masculine light. Her comments demonstrated to me, once again, that it's not the clothes we wear, per se, that determine how we're perceived but how we wear them and carry ourselves. And, most importantly, how well they express our genuine selves.

That is good, when a criticism can be taken as a compliment.

On the last visit of the dentist I didn't wear a mini skirt.
It turned out to be greater wisdom than I had anticipated. The dentist flys in every week or so and uses a room in the local nursing hospital, fitted out for that purpose. I really don't think that anyone actually maintains the equipment because the dentists often take an hour or so trying to get everything working. This day there were quite a few issues, all were sorted except for the airconditioning, which seemed to upset the dentist more than anything. When she had finished my refill, the chair misbehaved and I ended up in a very ungainly position.
As the service is free, there is no opportunity for comments from the checkout.

Today is the day after out local (American) football team won the US "Super Bowl", so I figured I'd wear the local colours for the day of red, white, and blue. The white was my very fancy lace-and-ruffles poet's shirt, the blue was my very recently-replaced blue silk brocade single-breasted waistcoat, and the red was my pair of satin palazzos. (I highly suspect the getup has been imaged in the past which is why I didn't shoot an image of it today.) This thing gets noticed.

And so it did when I sailed into my local for a few pints and some food this afternoon. A nice-looking 40-ish woman hailed me from across the bar and mentioned, "You look dashing! I love it!". I thanked her for it. So, yes, I still get out reasonably often.

Apparently there was a re-run of the Sienfeld "Puffy Shirt" episode recently as I took some stick about that at work. My comment on the matter was, "Who's Sienfeld and why should I care?"

It's going to be warm tomorrow. I'm thinking about trying to colour-invert the thing. I've got a black lace-and-ruffles short, and a yellow skirt. 'Tis a pity I lack a green waistcoat. In a mental scan of my closet I can do the inversion, but it'd be a green shirt, yellow skirt, and black waistcoat -- I wanted the ruffled shirt... Drat.

It is generally noted that the Man In Skirts is looking for acceptance from the female for wearing her traditional
style of attire

I am personally attempting to wear my female skirts as part of an otherwise male outfit.....so the Female is looking
at the male by being attracted by his fashion style...

Yesterday I saw a female who looked very "Ladylike " in her dress and overcoat..." ...However I did not consider
her outfit was male enough for me to wear.

I have found that sometimes I will wear a completely female outfit which looks male enough for me to wear as a male.

I do feel that there is definitely a difference between
the " Man in a Skirt "....and the Male Who Wishes to Appear as a Female......

I feel that the Male can successfully go out on the street escorted by his female partner
as long as he is not replicating an outfit which she might wear..

This does make the whole issue of The Man In a Skirt Outfit very complicated as the Male is possibly initially
attracted to his female partner by her outfit.

A case in point is the Female Wren Naval Uniform which makes the Fit and healthy female look attractive in
her Black Skirt or Black Trousers.......The Male Naval Officer looks equallly smart in his trousers....
However the gender of the wearer is easily assessed by observation........

Is The Gender Identification of the Man In A Skirt the downfall of every prospective Man in a Skirt ?

I don't think there has ever been any question of that. Having been a crossdresser for 20 years, I think I can safely say that I could wear the same outfit in either mode, look appropriate in that mode, but look and be treated entirely differently. I developed much of my sense of style while crossdressing.

Why on Earth do you say that? Plenty of the compliments I get from women on my attire make it crystal-clear they'd love to find an outfit just like it for themselves. I think it would be a kick to go out with a woman who's wearing exactly what I am or in matching suits, except I'm in the skirt and she's in the pants.

Loosen up pal! Stop looking for rules that don't exist! The first rule of men wearing skirts is ... there are no rules! Because "We're making the road by walking."

Do yourself a favor and stop overthinking this whole business. Just do what feels right and understand as you get comfortable with that uncertainty, it will be a whole lot more fun and you'll expand your wardrobe by a LOT!!

I agree with a lot of what Dave is saying.

One additional point. I thing that especially for us older skirt wearers , with the exception of our partners wives or others , we are more concerned about being accepted by our male friends and associates as opposed to being excepted by the ladies

I also agree with Dave. Early on in our marriage MOH and I used to wear identical tops, mainly T-shirts. Wearing identical is not a fashion faux pas. I would love to accompany MOH wearing identical clothes, top bottom, whatever. I look better in a skirt than she does but I would LOVE it if we had identical tops, she in nice trousers and me in a matching coloured skirt. Can I be kind here and say that MOH has a more rounded and larger frame than me but not as tall. Jenn and Amber will appreciate what I am saying. Do I think this could be achieved? Well, the identical tops certainly but on current attitudes the skirt may take a bit more work.

Incidentally MOH is sorting out her tops with a view to getting rid of some that aren't fashionable or don't fit. I suggested putting all our T-shirts together and weeding out the worst ones. She said, "That's only because you'd like to wear some of my tops." So she isn't completely blind or insensitive to my wants or wishes!!!!

Last weekend I attended one of the biggest conferences of this kind in Brussels, where I’ve met a lot of friends and colleagues of mine (I must say here that since the company I work for is globally distributed and most of us work from home, I see many of my colleagues in person maybe once or twice a year at conferences or other meet-ups, and many other colleagues I see even more rarely). I decided to take two skirts with me, the black Zara one and a black Skirtcraft Unaligned, wearing the Skirtcraft at the beer event the evening before and during two days of the conference, at the venue and to pubs afterwards. I was a bit concerned at first since it was the first time most of my colleagues and many of my friends saw me in a skirt (which I was wearing over trousers due to the weather), but as it turned out they did not mind at all. In fact, I also met a friend whose fashion choices have changed since the last time I met him and these day belong to a different section of this forum, and he was very supportive of it. A different colleague previously said at the Christmas party that she was expecting me to come in a kilt (and I came in trousers), so this time, I said, I decided to compensate for that and come in a skirt :)

I also have to admit that many other attendees looked unusual in lots of different ways, be it hair colour or fashion choices, but I guess it also comes down to a factor that we are, basically, geeks (free software fans) among the geeks (computer geeks), so understandably the numbers of people who do something unusual will be probably higher than otherwise :)

In general, I’m satisfied about how that worked out, I’m happy to work and be friends with people who are open and acceptive about such things. That encouraged me to wear skirts more in general and specifically in winter, something that I reduced a bit in recent months.

The day after the conference I went to a Belgian branch of the Dutch shop HEMA where I like to shop partly because of the bike accessories they sell, and I happened to see a bunch of skirts there and I couldn’t resist to try them on using the fact that the fitting room was unisex and very close to that section. I was quite surprised to learn that the lettered sizing of the skirts (S, M, L, XL) seemed unisex since the letters would match ones I would expect for male T-shirts and trousers. (Probably that wasn’t the intention, but still unusual.)

I personally have to disagree with this. I am an introvert and a loner as much. I used to worry about being accepted by everyone. I don't care anymore at this point in my life. I spent too many years trying to please everyone and am at the point in my life that I don't care if I am accepted or not. Most of the males I know in the area I live in are what I would call machismo types and I am certainly not molded for that. There is one particular group I work with that are a downright embarrassment to be around. They whistle at women and carry on like wild animals in heat, and then go home to their wives as if nothing happened.
I am off the soapbox now.

In view of the recent comments made by recent correspondants in this thread I feel we are going to have to agree
to disagree as we do not all completely agree ... bearing in mind our personal experiences and personal guide lines.

The biggest flaw is the mode of attire in which the Man in a Skirt wishes to appear as a Man in a Skirt with a group of
either males or females...or a mixed group.....

The third variable is the way in which the Male and the Female agree to appear as a couple within a mixed sex group

I have to agree with FFA on this as I don't vie for acceptance from either males or females [0]. I also am a loner, always have been and am definitely not of the macho type. I was never one for going out drinking, acting obnoxious or really interested in sports. So I couldn't really care what other males think just so long as they don't give any grief about what I wear and so far they haven't.

[0] MOH and family excepting.
