Born and bred in Melbourne Australia, have never left, I like the coldish winters and the reasonable summers, unlike in the northern parts of Australia.

I live in the land of the zenith Sun. That only comes around twice a year, so the rest of the time I make do with (or more accurately, am glad to have) the Sun closer to the horizon.

Re: where are we all from
Obvious from the right hand caption. Have lived within 50 miles or so of where I was born. York is a great place to live - a city but with the characteristics of a large town, plenty of history, great Universities, countryside just a mile or so away and all the shopping centres within cycling distance. Oh and museums such as the National Railway and Yorkshire Museum plus the best pantomime in the country at Christmastime.

Carl, you may be interested to know that York University was one of the contributors to the development of the Ada language when under Professor Ian Pyle when the project names were Tinman, Ironman and Steelman. I remember seeing some of the documentation while I was reading there.
Yes the Minster is basically a large Cathedral. It had to be underpinned in the 1960's as the central tower was sinking and being made from sandstone the pollution and general erosion means that there is a constant plan of replacement of bits and pieces of the external masonry. On 9th July 1984 a bolt of lightning struck the roof of the south transept and caused a fire which destroyed the roof and endangered the south transept Rose window. The entire window was later taken put and repaired by taking it apart and sandwiching each piece of glass, most of which were crazed due to the heat, between two pieces of glass and rebuilding it in the frame. I remember it well as I was working in the town centre at that time and I couldn't go my usual route as it was blocked off by fire engines. I'm not CofE by any means but it saddened me at the time as to how close we came to losing a historic and beautiful building. Of course being local I have only been in it twice in 34 years.
