Re: John Lewis Ad

I think the whole point of the passive lack of response is that they are so confident in the power of their insurance policy, they aren't at all worried about whatever disaster might strike - be it typhoon, earthquake, or hyperactive boy. "No worries about the china, insurance will pay for repl...

Re: Earthbound Trading

Eh, I'm with the majority on this one. Don't care for the style, and I definitely wouldn't care for the length (or lack thereof). I do have a nice collection of "pinafore dresses" (aka "jumper dresses" in the US) but they are calf-length to ankle-length. I like them because they ...

Re: LA Times article on men’s skirts

This, completely unrelated to the skirt subject at hand, made me spit out my morning tea in hilarity: “The brushwork here is ... present,” Reminds me of Truman Capote's "That's not writing, that's typing" or Dorothy Parker's "... the gamut of emotions from A to B". Getting back t...

Re: Breaking the Gender Binary with Rob Smith | Rob Smith | TEDxCMU

Stu, I would posit that men don't carry handbags is due to them having pockets, not only in trousers but also jackets. I started carrying a purse years ago when it became clear that I could not make room in my pockets for driving glasses, sunglasses, reading glasses, phone, pen, car keys, wallet, t...

Re: Clothes that Unite Us

I'm with Sinned on this one. Most of my knickers are what my friends derisively call "granny panties" - full-cut, high-waist, low-leg briefs that are rather like a big nylon sack around my groin.Because my waist is so much bigger than my hips (unlike the bodies these are usually designed f...

Ralph - I am not sure I understand your argument or how it relates to what I said, I thought I was agreeing with you, but I obviously did a very poor job of expressing myself! but here's a simple and very relevant question. Why do you wear skirts. Definitely "a" for me - I wish skirts (an...

Re: Clothes that Unite Us

For the life of me I cannot see how discussing outsize bra sizes has anything to do with it. Fair enough. I think I can follow the pattern of thread drift. We went from These are clothes common to both men and women and not intrinsically meant for one sex or the other to These are clothes which are...

Re: Breaking the Gender Binary with Rob Smith | Rob Smith | TEDxCMU

I partly agree with him that people should be able to dress as they want, but there is an internal contradiction in his point. On the one hand he says he wants to break the gender binary while, on the other hand, he is still associating clothing with gender. To my mind, you can't have it both ways....

Re: Clothes that Unite Us

Sure, it's a survey in a group that's going to attract people with hard to find sizes, but I don't doubt the problem is real. I had no idea breast sizes went up that high. Can you imagine being that one person (presumably female) who is 34LL? What would that even look like? Also, why is AA smaller ...

Re: How the length of a skirt can inhibit learning?

As to too short skirts, well I enjoyed them and don't feel my education suffered all that much from a couple of missing inches of cloth! :D Of course it has nothing to do with "inhibiting education". While I hate to speculate based on what others are thinking, I can hazard a guess on scho...

Re: Latest Developments in Fashions

Always wondered, why not just put the zipper for a dress on the front? Maybe that will be what determines a men's dress from a womens dress. The some of the egos can relax some. I always prefer a back zip, for a number of reasons (only some of which I understand myself - a psychiatrist could build ...

Re: Clothes that Unite Us

I hope so. They [ed: bras] look so unnatural and uncomfortable. Perhaps. My wife always hated wearing a bra, but she hated the discomfort of her generous breasts flopping around loose even more. Of course that's a sample size of exactly one, so I don't know how many women consider them a "nece...

Re: Rethinking Lingerie....

Ralph, I think you misunderstood what I was saying (or trying to say as obviously I failed); people shouldn't feel the need to justify wearing anything. The skirt was an example of me giving up justifying my choice. Jamodo shouldn't feel obliged to justify wearing a bralette, whatever the reason. N...

Re: Rethinking Lingerie....

Jim, that question can also be applied to men wearing skirts. I used to have "good" reasons for wearing a mini skirt, saying they are more comfortable and cooler in summer. As I got reluctant to give them up in winter I gave up rationalising and now just say "That is what I like to w...

Re: Lifestyle Asia: Who says dresses are just for women?

There is Ralph, you just have to cross the great divide. The similar examples that I own are UK female size 16-18 and possibly the most comfortable garments I own. With a little thought it is also very easy to dress them up or down as required. Well yes, of course we can (and do) wear whatever we j...
