Mine came out exactly in the middle - something I have suspected for a long tme.

Re: Canvas/denim unpleated skirt with big pockets

pelmut, did you put the zipper right in the side seam, then? It does sound tricky. Do you have any pictures? I have taken some which I hope will show how it was done. The first picture shows the skirt side view. The side seam is supposed to be straight, but I have put on a bit of weight since I mad...

A dearth of skirts

I have just done the P.A. for a very small low-key folk event, it was an unheated venue with a permanently-open door and the temperature was hovering around 14C., so I wore an ankle-length very full black cotton skirt with a warm underskirt. (Hardly anyone took any notice of what I was wearing - as ...

Re: Canvas/denim unpleated skirt with big pockets

That's a really smart design and it looks just right on you. The extra pockets give it an air of practicality, even if you don't actually use them. You don't really need a fly on a skirt, so you could move the zip right off to the side seam just behind the back edge of one of the pockets. I did that...

Re: How do you become skirt wearing

My interest in skirts began through sewing. I bought a house which depleted my savings; it needed new curtains but I could not afford to have them professionally made, so I found some secondhand ones that only needed new linings. As a child, sewing was never something I "didn't do", becaus...

The floor of the Crystal Palace in London was designed with gaps between the boards so that women's skirts would sweep the dust and rubbish through into the basement and save the cost of having to employ an army of cleaners.

Re: Skirt length - my experience

The shorter the skirt, the heavier the material needs to be if you want to avoid creating the wrong sort of impression.

Re: Mixing Menswear & Womenswear

From a strictly literal interpretation -- bereft of all the baggage and junk that society overlays on words -- technically when we don an article of clothing that was specifically designed for the other sex we (and this means both men and women) are crossdressing, I design and make most of my own s...

Botch upon botch

Over the years I've developed a 'kilt' pattern that works well with acrylic fabrics which hang nicely, so I thought I would try it out with some heavy-ish black cotton material instead. The kilt design is in three panels: (viewed from above in anticlockwise order) an outer front, a pleated back sect...

Re: Denim skirt wanted

The zip opening is so short just to get over the hips and the tighter the fit the better women seem to like it! The waist to hip ratio is closer now than it was years ago. Also men need a longer zip for obvious reasons when standing at the urinal. Doh! When you can lift the hem of the skirt to urin...

That's the downlead from the GPS antenna on my rooftop mast. Professional trick: When you replace it, allow a few extra inches of wire and form it into a loop downwards below the point of entry into the house. That will form a drip loop and prevent the water that dribbles down the wire from getting...

Re: Sightings "in the wild"

I'm not sure if it counts, but last Saturday night at Bath Ceilidh there were two men in kilts and me in a long black skirt. There were about 120 people at the dance, so 1:40 is not a bad ratio.

Re: Do folks notice or not?

I think the answer to the question is usually "Yes", but there is a great deal of variation in what happens after they have noticed. The response can be positive, neutral or negative; it can also be strong, moderate or weak. In an ideal world, the response would be weak or competely absent...

Re: Man-skirt day! 1st June 2014

It's a shame I shan't be able to wear a skirt that day because I shall be leading a canal work party. Skirts and bonfires don't mix very safely. I shall make up for it during the previous week, when I shall be wearing a kilt or a skirt for four days in a row at a local folk festival. It caused a few...

Re: Good press - it happens!

There's a ceilidh caller (Gordon Potts) who wears a black Utilikilt. We've nodded approval to each other :D Charlie At folk festival ceilidhs it is not unusual to see one or two men in kilts (in addition to myself and Gordon Potts), they are slowly becoming less unusual. The second half of the even...
