Re: Men in skirts in movies and TV
I rewatched 51st State last weekend. For those unfamiliar Samual L Jackson spends the entire film kilted, with no explanation given ( unless I missed that bit…). That film is, for me, a far better ‘ role model’ for our collective quest than the many comedy CD films that spring to mind. I agree. Tho...

Re: Up Helly Aa and tunics
Yes quite right Modoc but society has a long way to go before that's accepted. In the Viking period the tunic would have been a very male garment and not considered or actually allowed to women. Steve. Short garments were exclusively male until 1920s. Prior to that, women almost exclusively in most...

Of course, the “anyone can wear anything” message is specifically tied to woman taking menswear. No mention of the reverse direction.

Re: Bear Grylls
If you don’t require pure wool, you can get kilts at reasonable prices. For example, my Pride of Scotland (I think that’s the correct name) was around £50 from The Scotland Kilt Company. It’s in poly/viscose fabric and very comfortable.

I’d love to wear that, but it wouldn’t go down well at home

Re: Bear Grylls
SB: likewise. I was fortunate to walk into a gentleman’s outfitters in Jedburgh seeking an ex-hire kilt to be offered a handmade wool kilt from one (now defunct) of the best kilt-makers in Edinburgh. I paid £105 for the kilt, dress sporran and chain, belt with large buckle and flashes. It has seen s...

And there is of course the New Town in Edinburgh which is over 200 years old (if my memory is correct)FranTastic444 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 7:00 am There is a place called Newtown in Wales (used to pass through there many a time on holidays) and a much smaller village of the same name in England.

If they were half that price, I might risk the domestic opposition and buy one. But 60€ plus shipping and possibly import duty OSS not worth it.

Re: Let's never speak this word again
One thing that is definitely not feminine: my voice that borders on basso profundo. In my current church choir I have sung Db2 below the bass staff. For me an F is comfortable and an Eb just possible with a good warm up, deep breath and a prayer 🙏 :) When I get up in the morning with my vocal cords...

Re: New City New York.
There are several villages (or perhaps hamlets) in the UK called Unthank. I used to drive regularly through the one in Dumfries and Galloway and wonder if the ancestors there had a reputation for being grumpy

Re: Cultural Appropriation?
I behave no differently in skirts or kilts than in trousers (save for a little more effort in modesty) but my wife still fears losing her “manly man”. (I’ve never discovered what she means. I don’t do boxing, rugby, weightlifting and I don’t heft an axe or wield a chainsaw, ride a superbike or screa...
