Re: Men who are interested in normalising skirts in menswear need to learn to sew
A sewing machine is just a power tool, they aren't hard to use. I shared some things that do work in this article: With all respect RH, none of this explains your use of the word "need" in the title. The simple fact is that many designers in a variety of fields have little or no interest ...

Re: Hamilton Kilts (Amazon)
I got one in Gray (I could'nt find a name for the tartan, but I'm sure it has one) and one in Blackwatch . I have a cheap one(Also about 35€) in the more standard royal stewart tartan since before(but its only about 2m of fabric at the hem, so its really a wrap skirt and not a kilt, but if it gets ...

Re: Men who are interested in normalising skirts in menswear need to learn to sew
Here is a video series from an ex-army professional kilt maker in which he takes a kilt previously made to fit a man, and converts it to fit a woman. In this series he explains how the pleats need to be shaped differently to fit a male vs female figure. For a female, the pleats have a uniform taper ...

Re: Men who are interested in normalising skirts in menswear need to learn to sew
The point that I was making was not that there are not existing skirts on the market that can't work. Rather, there is a substantial possibility space for garment designs that nobody is exploring at the current time. Learning how to sew gives you the freedom to experiment without being constrained ...

Re: Rewriting the rules for menswear – new wearable skirts for men
The reason why some visual proportions work and others do not, is that humans tend to prefer things in simple mathematical ratios: -... [ cogent thoughts ] I shared a bunch of thoughts about these topics in the following article about a year ago: https://robehickman.com/skirt-silhouettes-men Very i...

That is the same concept as an 18th century petticoat, also known as a 'split side skirt', they became popular in the online sewing community about a year ago. The Japanese Hakama also uses the same closure style.
His design looks proportionate with his body.

Re: Men who are interested in normalising skirts in menswear need to learn to sew
Really? That "Really" was a challenge to the title of the thread, it was not a criticism of the seamsters among us. There's an implication that there are qualifying criteria to be a bona fide guy in a skirt or dress. That, of course, is complete nonsense and the sooner we quit theorising ...

Re: Rewriting the rules for menswear – new wearable skirts for men
it doesn't matter what you wear as long as you are happy. Exactly right! The bad news is that there is no empirical formula or magic bullet. We are discussing fashion and taste here, which is as subjective and fickle as any business could get. Skirts for men will become acceptable or they won't, it...

Re: Men who are interested in normalising skirts in menswear need to learn to sew
An aspect of why mainstream culture accepted women in trousers is that trousers started being designed to highlight the features of women's body shapes, and the same needs to happen for menswear skirts. Consider an anatomical differences between the sexes-the pelvis. This is a difference that is ev...

Re: Eurostar Uniform Skirts Now Unisex
Humans will categorically complain about any cultural / environmental change. People have for example been complaining en-masse about the closure of the M48 bridge to HGV traffic, even though that was done to prevent future structural issues / allow research into the severity of the problem.

Re: Rewriting the rules for menswear – new wearable skirts for men
These comments bring my mind back to the Eurostar Uniforms. The jacket with the skirt, looks good and well proportioned. The jacket is slightly longer than a Kilt jacket but - - IT WORKS :!: (Wish these 'uniforms' could be purchased by regular people, not just employees) Uncle Al  :ugeek: ...

Men who are interested in normalising skirts in menswear need to learn to sew
Garment design is to a large extent based on extrapolation of the shape of the body, finding shapes that work harmoniously with it. While there is some overlap, male and female bodies are not shaped or proportioned the same, and thus garments must be designed to look natural on one or the other. The...
