Re: What are you afraid of

I'm not afraid of spiders but from growing up in Australia I know that they should be treated with respect. Do not panic, but keep your distance until you have identified it. Huntsmans are fine indoors, everything else should be moved outside. Being in Europe it's like "there are no dangerous spider...

Re: What are you afraid of

It's a suggestive list but it's all circumstantial. Any of those statements can have many plausible reasons. Myself, I'm a fan of Occam's razor: prefer the explanation requiring the least number of assumptions. We know new coronavirusses jump to humans on a regular basis: SARS and MERS. We know wet ...

Re: Boys skirting the issue

The HEMA (an originally Dutch store) went for a non-gendered approach to children's clothing a couple of years ago after they released a new line with two jumpers with the following texts: * ‘little boy, big ideas’ * ‘little girl, big smiles’ The succeeding ruckus means they now just have a children...

Re: What are you afraid of

Another existential threat to humanity that gets limited publicity: the projected fertility of humans is zero by 2045. See https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/mar/18/toxic-chemicals-health-humanity-erin-brokovich?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other And nothing of value was lost :) OTOH, somewhere...

Re: What are you afraid of

I also wonder how the US can be fixed. Here in NL we also had a period of radical polarisation and identity politics and populism in the beginning of the 20th century, though at the time it was catholics vs protestants vs liberals vs socialists. It lasted on and off for 50 years and ended in 1917 in...

I agree. Being (apparently) the only one makes it twice as hard.

Re: Covid 19

Here's a good article on Slate about COVID and vaccinated folk: https://slate.com/technology/2021/07/covid-delta-variant-risk-vaccinated-breakthrough-cases.html This reminds me of a moment near the beginning of the pandemic when the initial information was: 90% of cases are mild. And I'm thinking "...

Re: What are you afraid of

I'm not afraid as such, fear doesn't help anyone. But my main concern about climate change is that it will render large tracts of Africa uninhabitable. Several billion people live there and they are not going to all sit around quietly starving to death. Maybe it won't happen. Maybe the weather patte...

Re: Online live meeting anyone?

Such a meeting would be interesting. You might have to pick a few slots to deal with timezones, but sure. Start small, announce a slot and see what happens.

Re: Covid 19

It concerns the effectivity of vaccins , being never 100%. most interesting is the sentence: Les vaccins contre le Covid-19, quel que soit le laboratoire, n'ont jamais prétendu être efficaces à 100% => The vaccins against covid 19, which probably escaped from the lab , never pretended to be 100% ef...

Re: Jing Daily: Is China Ready for Men in Skirts?

My impression from what I've seen about China (and somewhat borne out by wikipedia) is that as long as it's not a threat to the party, they don't care. Homosexuality was largely invisible during the Mao era. In the 1980s, the subject of homosexuality reemerged in the public domain and gay identities...

Re: Covid 19

As to the figures in the Netherlands, deaths where covid was a factor, but e.g. a heart attack was the actual cause, it was contributed to the covid as the registration system of the RIVM couldn't cope with more than one cause. There was an article thereon in the NRC if I'm not mistaken. I was talk...

Interesting. The majority are over-the-knee. My SO also comments she prefers longer skirts because she doesn't like the look of knees in general.
