Re: What to wear in Thailand.
I visited about 20 years ago and found them to be a tolerant people. Be respectful and modestly dressed around temples and public monuments; they had clothing you could put on over your own clothes to cover any indiscretions. In bars and restaurants you should be ok with anything that might be simil...

Re: A question about "kettles"
Thanks for the replies so far. It appears that the radio presenter's assertion may have been correct. Insofar as brewing and drinking tea, in the UK it is taken both with and without milk, or perhaps lemon, depending upon individual taste preferences and the tea blend involved. Most blends are ok wi...

Re: Women in pants
There is only one "minority" to whom they are dismissed and denied - the white heterosexual male - if they don't tick a box, they're not covered. It's a hidden bias because nobody considers them to be "a minority" or that they can suffer from discrimination or bias. If you look ...

A question about "kettles"
This is a rather odd topic, I know, but I want to understand whether, within some quarters of UK media, there is ignorance or if there is a factual base. A radio presenter (Heart FM) today stated on air that few Americans own or use a plug in electric kettle; indeed the presenter suggested a lot don...

Re: Women in pants
Why do the "overly-religious" types rail on guys who dare to stray from the path of trousers only (in spite of their supposed saviour perhaps never having seen a pair of trousers) but gut the gals a lot of slack? I suspect why, and that's because the US has effectively become a matriarchy...

Re: Wedding weekend
GPS is one thing that I will never tolerate in a car, much less one that talks at me. I'm more than capable of navigating the old-fashioned way -- including on thousand-mile-plus treks. "Sat-nav" is little more than one more "distraction in the cockpit" and I'd rather be driving...

Re: The Driving Kilt or Driving Skirt
...Terrible English - double negative sets a bad example. A linguistics professor was lecturing his class tat Russian is the only language where a double positive becomes a negative. Then came a voice from the back of the room, "Yeah, right." Sorry, Caultron, but this is the full joke: St...

The Good Men Project
Not sure if anybody here has read articles published by The Good Men Project, but I often read them with interest. It seems they are prepared to discuss and challenge conventions.

I do know that is correct as I watched the coronation on Television and saw the procession travelling through the Streets of London.... There is a famous quote from The P...

But it still demonstrates my key point that even back then, a woman was not simply "confined to skirts" in the metaphorical sense, but was able to make great achievements and win recognition.

... which is why Marie Curie was one of only two people who ever won the Nobel Prize for Physics twice..... Sorry to be pedantic, but she didn't win the Nobel Prize for Physics twice; she won it once (in 1903) and the Nobel Prize for Chemistry once (in 1911). She was the first woman to win a Nobel ...
