Re: What are you afraid of

We have Mink. These were all imported and 'farmed' at several locations throughout the country. Some while ago the bottom fell out of the price of mink pelts as it became unfashionable to wear real mink (or any other furry animal) and the mink farms went bust & released their captive creatures into ...

Re: What are you afraid of

You're absolutely right of course, Fred. How remiss of me not to have remembered that little detail. Depending on whose story you believe, there was this little boy who asked his Mum very seriously, where did Mankind come from? To this profound question the Mum launched into the story of the Garden ...

Re: What are you afraid of

About 15,000years ago the ice retreated off the European landmass and small animals including snakes migrated gradually northward colonizing areas with new vegetation. There was a simultaneous rise in sea levels which flooded the Irish Sea and later the English Channel making islands out of Ireland ...

Re: Corona Virus

Moon, I am sorry to read of your father's distress, but you say he has been a life-long chain smoker until recently. (Med. hat on)...Lungs, which transfer oxygen from the breathed-in air to the bloodstream do so through the areolae, tiny little seperate sacks like bunches of grapes which normally ha...

Re: Merry Christmas

Long ago in Britain well-heeled people with little else to do would call round to friends' houses and deliver little greeting cards on the day after Christmas Day. This became widely practiced and people placed a little special box outside their doors for people to put their greetings in and so that...

Re: Skirt Wearing by Women Increasing?

Thick tights, thicker tights and skinny pull-on leggings have become standard wear for girls/young women here of late. This is reflected in the rag shops, where one has to search the whole place or a few skirts tucked away in some corner. Come the warmer weather and a rash of cheap A-line miniskirts...

Carl, I'm so pleased for you that your long-planned trip to Savannah went well and was a success. You had written little about it (that I had read) and I was wondering.... I expect with the mild weather down there you could go about in Summer clothes, for a change. I never wear jeans. Hate 'em. The ...

Re: R.I.P. Sidney Poitier

When he was a young man he played a new teacher at a rough East London school, put in to teach a rebellious class of unruly teenagers. 'To Sir with love' captivated everyone who saw it and since then everything Sir Sydney touched turned to Gold. It is a great pity Stars like him have to age at all. ...

Re: Christmas Greeting 2021

New Year's greeting now.

They're promising us colder weather soon (surprise?) so if you're in the military, expect to have to turn up and 'dress by the right' kilted regardless.

Re: Autumn 2021

B&B, Lock size again. The Ardnacrusha dam lock near Limerick dictates what may enter the non-tidal Shannon. 120 X 18 feet. That Dutch barge looks about 90 X 16 feet. I met Joe Treacy who rescued and restored Barge 4E. At 60' X 13'6" she can travel the entire connected system here. and they researche...

Re: Autumn 2021

Geron, What a beautiful picture and those restored barges are a sight for sore eyes. Now that they aren't ferrying goods for pence it's nice to see the hull shining white. A few years ago I had the great pleasure of spending 10 days aboard 'LaBoheme', a 130ft 19th Century Dutch leeboarder and a rema...
