Re: Canoe or Kayak - You Decide!

To add to the confusion I have a 14' "kayak" with a 55" long cockpit and about a 31" beam that is pretty much incapable of a roll self-rescue. It's basically a decked canoe that one uses a double blade to propel. It's rather heavy at 66 lb. I also have a newer craft built on an o...

Re: Engineers

Civil engineers may design bridges and buildings, but Operating Engineers build them and keep them working. Without us nothing would work or last very long. When you're in the hospital and on life support remember that an operating engineer somewhere along the line is keeping that equipment, and you...

Re: So I'll be wearing a dress for a week in summer

Doesn't everyone carry a backpack these days? I just bought an Osprey Talon 11, an eleven litre day pack, for short hikes and birding. It holds just enough without the ability to load it for an expedition. I work in a very upscale and international environment and most people carry backpacks to work...

As long as there's something underneath to avoid a show a skirt that short isn't functionally different from swimwear. A longer hem allows for flash-free freedom from constriction that is the reason some of us wear skirts.

Re: Attracting more looks than I do when wearing a skirt.

Reminds me of the overalls I wore in the 1970s. Not quite as colorful, but with hippie looking patches including a big multicolored mushroom across the entire bib. I had them with me in the Navy and got pigeonholed and shunned by the old heads and redneck types. I just liked to relax in something co...

Re: Is this just a southern mannerism?

The contemporary term is [rad-fem hate-speech redacted]. It doesn't seem limited to region, or gender for that matter. You can find "good ol' boys" and their counterparts everywhere. I'd wager that it's more visible in deep backwater cultures, but just as present in boardrooms.

Re: Tuba Skinny

Great little ensemble! Someone gave me an old sousaphone to fix up. I usually play a concert Bb contra-bass (tuba). Gotta get some work done on that old horn now.

Ranch footwear varies here in the west from "farmer type" lace-up work boots to what we call Packers, which are a lace-up western style boot with a riding heel. Cowboy boots are usually for dress-up, horse shows, or drugstore cowboys. I visited a cowboy themed bar in Vermont one time and e...

Re: Aggressive women

A perspective I didn't notice as I read the thread; maybe some women are being welcoming when they comment on our skirted appearance. Women tend to bond with each other in sort of a girls club. I see it a lot. The doors to the club are not completely latched against men who are nonthreatening, and o...

Re: A Modern Style of Tunic or Robe

I have several shirts of the mountain man style, historically accurate for the 18th or 19th centuries. They are about mid-thigh long and quite loose fitting. They also are made with side vents from the hem to about 4" higher. I suppose that these days wearing breech clouth and leggings would be...

I swore an oath and signed a piece of paper offering my life to protect the Constitution of the USA, which includes the first amendment. Start telling me what I can't wear and we're going to have a problem.

Re: St Patrick's Day greeting

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all. We have had a high near 70F today and all over town folks of any heritage have been celebrating. It might have a lot to do with beginning the year's festival cycle and food/drink. People here love a party. I, on the other hand, prefer a quiet walk in the mountains, an...

Re: Honorifics

Titles can be a problem on the job in America. I work with blue collar types who would have a real good time with mine. I have the legitimate honorific of being addressed as Sir (Taj) and my wife as Lady P. That's way too stuffy even for my management chain. I sometimes introduce us casually that wa...

Re: unisex clothing.

IMHO the business world is all about the dollar. Anything out of the ordinary can pose risk. Look at how the markets respond to random fears. Your Tahari suit looks great, but lock-step business seems to fear and reject anything that makes them uncomfortable. While we think of ourselves as open-mind...

Very much so, crfriend. I try to keep my social life among men who might be considered gentleman, but they seem to be getting harder to come by.
