Why no 'save/retention' function on delay of posting new messages

I know this has been raised before -- I probably should have caught it -- I started a message, but was called to dinner and upon return finished the message and hit submit. I got the dang not eligible to post message which automatically deleted everything I had written --WHY can't this requirement be fulfilled without losing the message????? I know it has been an aggravation to a number of us at times -- I'm not a programmer, but it doesn't seem it should be too horrendous a task to allow a sign-in without loss of content.

There is a way to "save draft" and it is located to the left of
Preview and
Submit
buttons at the bottom of the reply/post form.

There must be a browser specific component to this, because if I type something, leave it for a day and hit submit, I get a warning about the session being invalid and to try again. And the text is still there.
Which I guess is a roundabout way of saying Works for me(tm). This is Firefox on Linux.

As Uncle Al has noted it is all there right in front of you to the tools to do this - - -
However - - -
That failing remember to avoid being distracted (phone call someone at door dog needs constitutional walk etc.)
Copy and paste to an alternative site or page --- frequently and more often !
I use notepad *** actually I do my work in notepad and copy and paste it back to the skirtcafe reply -
Previewing it and promptly Submitting.
Note pad is not 100% perfect - it too has issues but saving is easy as long as you don't turn off your computer.
Don't wait for some wonky issue to pop it's ugly head up and wipe out your opus grande !
You only need to learn this lesson once !
Egad I hate that when that happens !!!!!

I've found that when that happens to me, I can log in again, then use the browser's "back" button a few times to regain the composition page -- with the intended message on it (!) -- and then submit it because the cookies have been renewed along with the session. Note that I use Firefox on Linux, this may not work on all systems.

Sometimes this will work with Safari, other times not.
