Is that a thing that is peculiar to a British Guy of certain vintage though?
I had on a navy dress and ankle socks with white hi-tops today what I called baseball boots as a kid.
Worked for me at any rate.

White ankle socks with baseball boots or converse are fine

Long white socks with sliders or sandals are a whole different matter. Very British.

My feet would swelter in shoes; even with sandals I usually ditch the socks and can't wait to ditch the sandals as well when inside -- and I'm not even in the a hot zone. We all have our personal preferences but let's not fall into the trap of dictating approved fashion lest we too be judged!

Following general opinion:

There is nothing wrong with men wearing sandals, but they must be worn without socks. Therefore, it is not even about the choice of socks, socks are no go.

But to men liking sandals with socks, it might change. Just a couple of years ago, white socks were banned (at least where I live). Now you see men in white socks all the time.

I wear saddles too but not with socks. Some things just don't work.
Strangly though if persisted you can get used it it. I know a PE teacher who wears long white socks with slders, I'm used to his dress now and it's fine.
