New Technologies
Re: New Technologies
RewatchedRed Planet. The movie dates back to 2000, but but the technologies displayed largely reflect where we are headed.
Weak AI-seems to be the case with the spacesuits and the Mars landing craft. These utter important information but don't really engage in conversation with humans.
Enhanced Strong AI seems to be the case for the Mars 1 mothership.
Wearable electronics.
The helicopter drone launched from the back of AMEE.
AMEE (Autonimous Mapping Exploration and Evasion), the dog robot, however, is way beyond what we have now.

Re: New Technologies
Historians have studied the phases of civilizations. Generally, one major change tends to result in the late phase of an era. If there are at least two major changes at about the same time, that generally means the start of a new era.
The Black Death was a catalyst that led to the end of the Middle Ages in Western Europe. From a feudal organization towards the nation state, commercial capitalism, and the Age of Exploration. This was the Early Modern period, from the Italian Renaissance to the late 18th century, when the Industrial Revolution began in England. The 19th and 20th centuries would be considered the late phase of the modern period.
Two major changes-two fields of technology that are very different from each other-in combination:
1. An information revolution.
2. Bio-technology, as applied directly to humans.

Re: New Technologies
Very short summary of previous information revoltions:
1. Invention of writing.
2. Invention of the printing press.
With the application of electricity we got:
3. Telegraph.
4. Land line telephone.
5. Radio.
6. Television.
The current revolution is not yet complete. So far it has seen the internet, modern phones, etc. Electronics has become so capable that much of the old ink-on-paper print media is now obsolete. (Periodicals are dying).
One aspect of todays revolution has no analogy in previous revolutions. Strong Narrow AI. The closest analogy I can think of is the domestication of animals. Because animals have nervous systems.
I recall a documentary, a re-enactment of the remote past. Wolves cautiously, tentatively approaching a camp fire. Looking for scraps of meat. Leading to taming, partnership, and eventually to today's dogs.

Sorry about that.
I had intended to link to a YouTube video, Megaprojects series-"The Mushroom Motherboard: The Crazy Fungal Computer That Might Change Everything."

Gee, and here I was hoping that it'd be something about intelligent and fun women who liked computers... Well, one can always hope...

Re: New Technologies
Contemplating fungal computing, a new term popped into my consciousness-Conventional Computing.
Referring to electronic digital or electronic analog computers. (I understand that a few of the early electronic computers were analog). Such seem almost mundane compared to some concepts.

Re: New Technologies
You're forgetting the mechanical analogue computers here -- lots of which touched more than a few lives. Here's a few examples:
1) Gunnery computers on naval vessels,
2) Automobile distributors and carburettors,
3) Some of the early aircraft flight simulators
Then there were the electronic analoges, as well a digital/analogue hybrids that were used in aircraft design.
Computing -- both analogue and digital -- has a long and compelling history behind it if one cares to actually look behind the curtain.
