Are pajamas as outerwear the new fad?
Over the weekend I attended an outdoor event and observed many
women of all ages (but especially in the middle-aged bracket)
wearing pajama bottoms, pajama tops, and some one-piece
outfits. And a few men, too. These were brightly colored,
flamboyant, cartoon prints, plaids, polka dots, stripes, etc.
At a supermarket I saw a family of five, including three
teenage or pre-teen, all wearing their new hoodie footie
pajamas. They were in the loudest, brightest, cartoon prints
imaginable. At a movie theatre complex on New Year's eve,
there were plenty more to be seen.
I've seen plenty of crazy-pattern leggings, but I never would
have expected to see so many crazy-pattern pajamas worn as
street-legal loungewear and outerwear. I like it.
Is this a trend? Has anyone else noticed?

This has been, sadly, a "trend" for the past couple of decades. I first noticed it in the 1990s, and it gradually got more prevalent in the naughties. I don't welcome it. We're already altogether too "casual"; this just takes it down another notch.

First "underwear as outerwear" (Thanks "Madonna") now jammies as public-wear. What next?

I don't know if I have seen it going on that long, but I do agree the wearing of pajama or lounge pants has become fairly commonplace here in northern IN
The ladies have really lost touch with any feminity. I probably see five to ten a week in pj bottoms. In temperate weather. Then there is the new
explosion the desigener print leggings or tights. I think the tights are the least flattering thing I have seen to date, they show off every little bump, bulge, fold, and wrinkle. Then there is the always skintight bluejeans, not much better . Where did the ladylike poise pride and presentation go? Its a kinda a shame our ladies lost this art.
Then there's skirts I see maby 1 out of 25 in a skirt.
And the most flustrating point. Some ladies would be very quick to point out a man can't wear a ladies skirt. If you were to tell them then they should wear one. They would be quick to tell you to mind your business I can wear what ever I want!

Here in Phoenix pajama bottoms are relatively rare, but more common for men. It's like, the guys who'd wear those super-baggy shorts in summer might wear pajama bottoms (or close look-alikes) during the cooler season. However, I have seen some hiking skirts lately.

Most women wear jeans or yoga pants this time of year, but occasionally you see skirts for office wear, Sunday best, or more formal occasions.

In summer the young and shapely here revert to short shorts, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The line between sweatpants and pajama bottoms can be thin.

Personally I think the pajama look is really influenced by the Grunge look that a lot of the folks nowadays seem to be going for. I think the entire idea is to make yourself look as if you don't give a damn about your appearance and unfortunately it also leads to people not giving a damn about anyone. While it is nice to dress how you want at home. at least be somewhat tasteful when out in the public eye no matter what you wear. But then you also see a lot of the heaviest folks wearing the smallest spandex creation they can find on the beach. And no I don't go to the beach any more as I don't wish to view that or go home mad because I'm going home alone.

Yes, grunge can be like that. People spending large amounts of time and money in the hope of looking fashionably disheveled.

Unfortunately Bertino there is nothing new about that clothing choice, which is about as charitably as I can refer to that practice.

These are not your grandpa's long johns. They look throughly modern,
in a comfortable kind of way. Except for a few "sloppy joes," they were
spiffy and snazzy rather than sleazy and scroungy.
It may be a regional thing. The event was in southern California (I don't
live there) and it was on a chilly and windy day when I saw all the pajamas.
It is definitely a seasonal thing. These pajamas (especially the hoodie
footie variety) are a popular and heavily advertised gift item for around
the holidays. I was just surprised to see so many of them out in public.
I realize this has nothing to do with skirts. It's just another example of
unisex clothing going off in an interesting new direction.

From Betabrand, you can buy "Vajamas" made of the fluffy fleece they call "Vagisoft"...it leaves little to the imagination as to the texture. Also is the "Suitsy", a onesie suit that pulls on and buttons up the front.
