The Dinkum. Australian wrap for men.
I have designed a kilt like wrap for everyday wear.
This sample has 5 box pleats at the back, a full over and under apron, hip pockets and velcro closure. For more details, have a look at and add comment to:

Hi, could you post instructions for making? I like the look. How is the wrap fastened? Velcro?

Re: The Dinkum. Australian wrap for men.
I have put basic instructions on my Facebook page.
The skirt part is made from 1 single piece of fabric.
It has (in this case) 5 box pleats across the back. (different to match the fabric design)
I have inserted the pockets into a dart on either side.
Then trim and hem the apron edges and attach a waist band.
For this sample I used velcro across the top of the aprons for closure.
For my first sample I used a tie and D rings to close the wrap.
The total is about 2.5m of fabric 75cm wide for a 96cm waist.

Was this design inspired by traditional kilts?

I first saw this via Facebook, and have commented there. It looks like quite a promising design to me.

Yes. I am trying to draw on the acceptance of the kilt but add features and material to make it an everyday item.Grok wrote:Was this design inspired by traditional kilts?
I added side pockets and make it out of an easy care light weight fabric and I am looking at either velcro or tie closure.
My aim is to try to design an item that is easy to wear and at an affordable price.

Would it be reasonable to describe the Dinkum/Freeman as a nontraditional kilt? As an extension of kilting?

I wish to use the acceptance of the kilt as a starting point and use The Dinkum to step away from the kilt but bring the acceptance with me. The first step of many I hope.

Mr. Utopia, have you considered posting to kilt forums? I believe that some of them accept discussion of nontraditional kilts.

Re: The Dinkum. Australian wrap for men.
My aim is to make a skirt for men that is attractive to the current market and maybe open up the market a little. I tried taking that head on with the first designs of the Original Freeman but that only seemed to work with a small portion of the current market and was to bigger leap for any new market. I have tried to go back to baby steps with the Dinkum and lever off the Kilt acceptance. This is by adding pockets and changing the material to something more appropriate for everyday wear, for warmer climates and less expensive. If the Dinkum gains acceptance, then I will keep moving the posts away from the kilt toward other styles of skirt wear for men.
I think the word 'subversive' was used in other posts.
