outdoor skirts and dresses
I recently found some outdoor skirts for men at 'Bergans of Norway' outdoor gear website. Google their name and at the start of the website click on your area (they have outlets all over Europe and Northern Americas) then click on clothing and 'dresses/skirts comes up with 'women' or 'men'!! For women there are 2 skirts and 2 dresses and for men the same 2 skirts are shown. These are wind and waterproof simply styled skirts and should be good for hill walking. One of the dresses is a wool and artificial fibre design that is stretchy and has a hood and if you got one to fit would be a great general purpose dress. The main problem is that prices are not shown only a meaningless 0-100 range. It seems that price will depend on the individual shop. Being oil rich Norway is very wealthy and everything is very expensive.
I really like the fact that they are openly selling skirts for men, it is refreshing and I wish they would do the same for the dresses and also a larger range. Does anyone out there have these skirts/dresses and what are they like? I really fancy the wool hooded dress and it is just (!) down to fit and price.
Thanks for any feedback Dave (Skirtedbrit)

The idea seems to be that you wrap one around you during a break from your skiing or mountaineering, to keep warm while inactive. Much easier than taking your boots off to put an extra pair of trousers. Very practical.
Keep on skirting,

So the idea is to wrap the skirt around your trousers...for extra insulation? I recall asking a woman why she did so during a bleak winter day, and that was her explanation. That makes sense. And in this case unisex may also make sense.

Yes -- especially if the fabric is wind-resistant. The problem with most trousers is that they don't trap a lot of air, and when the wind blows against them not only pushes the fabric directly against the leg it also dumps all the heat that's in that little bit of trapped air.Grok wrote:So the idea is to wrap the skirt around your trousers...for extra insulation?
The skirts (wraps, it sounds) shown both function that way.
The first winter I spent after starting to wear skirts I found that even without heavy petticoats and the like, a full skirt is a lot warmer in the winter than even the heaviest of my trousers. I must make quite the sight when I'm out shoveling snow so attired following a storm.

Perhaps the winter skirt idea
may be practical enough to persist.

I like the idea, the black skirt tempts me, and comes in my size, the other skirt looks shorter than I would like. Very tempted.

I was looking for further information about Bergans skirts. I did find a paragraph that begins "Maribu has been specially developed for active women who need an extra insulation layer...." Perhaps someone thought that a woman's skirt-designed for a practical purpose-could be marketed to men. The insulation was described as "Made in Pertex Quantum filled with light PriaLoft Eco insulation with extra padding at the back. The skirt keeps you shielded from the elements and provides extra warmth to your behind and thighs."
Re: outdoor skirts and dresses
http://www.thenorthface.com has skirts under "pants and shorts for women." One is a running skirt, but the Oh Dee Oh skirt is an insulated garment for cold weather. I don't know if it is intended to be worn over trousers, but it has a drawstring, implying that it can be. So are seeing a new trend?
I'm not sure if the "eat my dust skirt" is actually skorts, but it is described as having "boy-short liner with stow pockets."
