Has anyone tried a cotton half slip instead of an expensive kiltliner ? I cant see any real difference except price.

I have not tried or worn a slip under my kilts.
But I do not think that cotton is the material of choice.
Cotton would not have the slick slippery smoothness that silk; nylon; rayon
or polyester does to facilitate ease of movement between two materials.
That being noted - flarob you are on the right page. You do not need an
expensive kiltliner when a half slip will do. I would not pay more than
a few dollars for the slip. An expensive kiltliner might be made out of
silk but a simple department store nylon should be just fine for your
needs.

Just make sure to get the slip with minimum decorative trim (lace) or better
yet none. Slips come generally in two colors black and white - black being the
preferred color for wearing under dark clothing. Other colors might be hard
to find or special order.

in cold weather I wear a nylon slip, I find that it makes to kilt swing more which is nice

I second to all that was said.

I thought about nylon, since most slips are made of that. I just thought that cotton might be a tad cooler. I'm in Fl and the temps are running upper 70's to lo 80's.

If you can get the slip in silk for a reasonable price go for it.
Check out the slips in nylon.
To often people think of it as a hot non breathing material but that
is not the case. Slips made of nylon are much lighter and with their
ease of movement are much more cooler than one would expect.
Cotton while it may seem to be cooler does not release/evaporate
sweat-perspiration as well as other fabrics (i.e. silk) and when wet
it is just like wearing a wet wash cloth or beach towel.

I have a word for that, RIT...Rit brand cloth dye works wonders for hard to find but preferred colors on clothing. I find (with my size problems) that I can buy skirts (and slips) cheaper if they are white. I buy only nylon slips in bulk ie: 3 or more at a time for a price break. I put one ounce of RIT liquid dye in a bucket half full of warm water for each pound of clothes to be dyed. stir for 10 minutes, remove from mix, put in a bucket of cold water, stir intermittantly for 5 minutes, replace the water for 20 minutes total or until the water has no sign of dye and dry in clothes dryer on warm. Viola! clothes in whatever color you want. Personally, I like Tangerine and Aquamarine.

I have three nylon half-slips. Best is the one with two slits up either side. $5 or so was the cost. Comfortable with all underwear options. One time I needed one and all I could find was black with a very thin lace trim. I manned up and bot it anyway. It is never visable so wearing even the laced version no longer troubles me. That and $10 will buy you coffee and a slice of pumpkin or banana bread at Starbux.

You should consider a kilt liner from Comfilon. They are made from nylon and look to be comfortable.
Their leg wear items are great too and look good with any kilt.
I know, I wear leg wear daily, always with my kilt.

The problem for me has been static cling, especially in the winter. A can of Static Guard takes care of the problem.

What I did was go over to the outlets near me and spoke to a very nice lady at the Vanity Fair outlet store, who measured me and suggested the proper size for me. I told her the kilt was 22" long and she suggested an 18" vanity fair nylon half slip. Works Wonderful.

I use 65/35 poly/cotton batiste for the slip/liner I use with my wool kilt. It's not too hot and it doesn't cling to the kilt.

I haven't found anything that works well with my utilikilt -- they all bunch up after a while. The kilts I make myself have a (very) lightweight polyester lining, so the slips stay where they belong, and the kilt hangs freely even in soggy (100% humidity, > 27 C) weather.

The kilt slips have a bit of extra cloth at the front, so when I sit, they fall between my legs (to spoil the view )
