It's one of the world's great places. I'd love to get down there some time.

Last couple of days have been a bit cool - daily highs mid 60's F.

Great for long skirts and long sleeve shirts, but forget the cold beer and bring me some hot coffee.

It's more like October than July!

No rain for a week, average temp is 95F outside, Humidity 90%. I have my window units all set at 72F. The Florida Keys are within Ocean style water no more than a half mile away in any direction. I have a seawalled canal behind my house that goes to the Atlantic Ocean 300 yards away. :blue:

Was on vacation last two weeks and I survived the hottest weather in my life on Thursday (23.July). The hot wind from Africa (called Sirocco) was blowing over Sardinia and Corsica . Almost no temperature difference in shade or in full sun. My temperature sensor outside the car was measuring 47 to 50 deg. C in the sun and 46 to 47 in the shade. The wind was so hot you felt like someone opened the oven to check the food in it

There were many fires and even 2 people (shepherds) died while rescuing their herds.

we've been having :D
I don't like my A/C bills ($433.70) but the alternative
is putting my wife in the hospital--Not a desirable

I just got a look at the weather forecast for here and, Ugh!, it's going to be in the upper 80s for most of the rest of the week with humidities likely in the 80-90 percent range at high temperature times and 99+% at cooler times (read, "clammy" and "condensing"). I can hardly wait.

There's a stretch of "asphalt jungle" that I have to drive through on the way home (at high temperature time) that's usually a good ten degrees warmer than the weather service reports; that'll likely be almost a hundred for the next few days, and back when I had a thermometer in the car, I've seen temperatures of 115+.

Like Al, my wallet is going to smart from this for the A/C, but I'd prefer to be a bit lighter in the bank-account than have Sapphire in hospital. The leccy-bill usually runs about a hundred per month, but I suspect most of that is the computers; the 15,000 BTU unit that cools the living-room, dining/computer room, Sapphire, and a few cats costs about another hundred per month to run -- and it's worth it. The little 5,000 BTU one in the bedroom is cheaper, but no less necessary.

I tolerate heat reasonably well; Sapphire does not -- and she likes winter, and I hate the cold (especially cold and wet). Go figure.

Carl, you tolerate heat ok because you're slender, wider people get hotter in the same temps. Sapphire is wider than you are. She's shaped more like me, although still svelt compared to me. Transversely, wider people tolerate cold weather better because they have better built in insulation where you, being slenderer, don't. We all have parts of ourselves we prefer over all others. That's what makes us all original. :hide:

Hi Skip,
What you say about the relationship between body type and heat tolerance/intolerance is generally true, but there are some exceptions.

In individuals with or at risk for metabolic syndrome, the production of fat in the body and heat intolerance is linked to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance, aka Diabetes Type 2 can develop in individual and/or be a genetic factor.

What happens in naturally slender people, like Carl, is that his natural insulin sensitivity causes his carbohydrate metabolism to store energy as glycogen in his muscles. In insulin resistant people, like me, my carbohydrate metabolisn causes me to store energy as fat throughout my body and in my liver and affects my kidneys.

In my particular case, I have always been heat intolerant, even as child and before I became "wide". My first case of heat stroke occurred when I was about seven. Risk of heat stroke has been a constant in my life and I typically have numerous episodes throughout the summer.

Coping with my metabolism has always been a challenge. A few family members also have metabolic syndrome, but frustratingly many of them are insulin sensitive, including my brother who, like Carl, can eat anything and be slender.

The discovery of the different carbohydrate metabolic pathways and relationship to insulin appears to be a fairly new discovery.

So to all who are Type 2 and struggle with your weight, there is a reason. You still have to follow the diabetic guidlelines regarding diet and exerccise, but if you feel frustrated because you lose weight slowly, there is now an explanation.

Hope this helps those who are also struggling.

It is miserably hot and muggy here in North Texas today. At 2:00 PM I have to be at a graveside service for a baby that died in the womb at 7 months. Me and Peggy are having to dress cool, not in the usual funeral attire, just too hot. I'm in a white short sleeve dress shirt and a 17" black Utilikilt with black boots ... funerals usually call for something a bit dressier around here, but the whole family already agreed to dress for the hot Texas sun.

Summer has happened here far too early. Records were broken all over the state. Yesterday reached a scorching 35 degrees here in Warwick, with strong nothwesterly winds gusting to 60kmh, and we also have extreme fire weather warnings and all existing fire permits are cancelled. this didn't stop a historic weatherboard pub being gutted by fire on Sunday night.

DEGREES??? 35 degrees is, IF Australia's degrees are the same as the rest of the world's degrees, 3 degrees over freezing water into ice. :bom:

Celsius or, if you like, centigrade, Skip, we went metric a couple of decades ago (dammit) So, about 96 in the old scale, and 100 in Brisbane. It's like Kilometres replacing miles--we just had to go further for the same dsistance. OH, and I forgot, daylight saving fades the curtains more quickly :P :P
