Well, in the spring and summer, I go bare as it's too hot where I live to bother with hosiery, fortunately, my legs look nice, so I don't need to enhance them. In the fall, depending on my mood, I'll put on pantyhose, however, that's infrequent at best, but in the winter when it gets good and cold, I break out my tights.

I spend most of my time in an area where it never freezes, and have never needed extra legwear when out and about. A good woolen kilt and long socks suit me fine. In the evenings, if I'm just sitting around, I've taken to wearing a long skirt, but day time, it's rarely that cold.

At present however I'm in Grenoble surrounded by snow-covered mountains. I had to wrap up this morning to go out; pullovers, overcoat, scarf, an extra pair of socks, and my kilt. The frost was still on the ground, but luckily no wind. I cycled some 5 kms each way, without stopping anywhere long enough for anyone to ask my if I was cold. My nose and ears were indeed none too comfortable, but my bare knees did not suffer as I kept moving. It's onlt the parts of the body that don't move that get chilled, not the parts doing the work.

Although my granddaughter has more than once advised me to get a pair of tights, I'll continue to manage quite happily without.

You are lucky. Here at the moment it's -4C and 84% relative humidity -- cold and raw. If I opt for a skirt later when I go out I shall most definitely be wearing legwear in a rather heavy grade; however, in my computer room it's a nice comfortable 23C and I'm lounging about in my nightshirt.

I wouldn't be without 'em. It's just too cold here. You have a forward-thinking granddaughter there by the way!

I hate tights - prefer either opaque stockings or just long socks and in the summer bare legs.

Ah, there's no accounting for taste!. We're all different depending largely on the climate we live in & the seasons resulting therefrom. Here in steamy equatorial Ireland, legwear is mandatory as protection from the year-round attacks from mosquitoes/leeches/paranhas &c.

Seriously, though. I'm an active rower and my legs get bare exposure all the year round, thanks to our mild-ish climate and are permanently tanned as a result, so in fine weather they don't need any adornment.
However, when it's chilly/damp/freezing on go the thick tights, which are opaque, of course.

I believe this is a good thing and should be embraced. That we're all different, and have differing views, is healthy. It's especially nice to see that we can discuss these differences without resorting to epithet or other general mudslinging.

Yeah, you're nice and warm whereas I am south of you and freezing my cajones off. Stop stealing our warmth! Redirect the gulf stream (and North Atlantic Drift) towards New England!

In point of fact, I got dressed to go out earlier -- and am still so attired -- but then the snow started to fall and both Sapphire and I decided to stay in for the night. The damage is expected to be ten inches of crud from the skies. Thank goodness for leftover lasagne!

Cheers, lads! The New Year is almost upon us.

There's just a slight problem there, and it's to do with the beautiful blue-and-white ball we live on. You see, the thing rotates eastwards constantly generating vortices in the high latitudes which in our case directs the Gulf Stream,/North Atlantic Drift away from the US/Canada coast eastwards towards N. Europe. The guys standing at the equator are hurtling Eastwards at 1,000mph, whereas we at our latitude are going at less than 700mph. By the same token the guys standing at the North/South poles are just standing there getting dizzy, going round & round.

This of course doesn't begin to take into account the little fact that we ALL are hurtling round the Sun at Ca. 40,000mph and the Lord Upstairs only knows just how fast the Sun itself is charging along. At this stage I say 'Pass'.

It also arranges for moist mild air to invade our shores on an ongoing basis giving us absolute Zero hope of any prolonged dry spell anytime soon.....or even two consecutive days the same, for that matter.
To cope with our continuing diaspora and efforts to colonise the New World, negotiations to build a proposed bridge from Kerry to Nova Scotia foundered on who was going to pay for the extra four inches needed to be added to the middle every year to compensate for techtonic plate movement. Also, the legs were going to have to be quite tall in the middle, it seems. I once drew a joke cartoon of the approach road to this aforementioned bridge showing signs for the exit marked 'Ballinskelligs West' and warning motorists that the services (petrol &c) were the last for 2,849 miles !!

....So I'll stick with my Winter tights!

Take a quick listen to Monty Python's Galaxy Song from The Meaning of Life. The numbers aren't exact but they're close enough. The last line, however, trumps the lot.

Indeed, and without that continual supply of warm moist air, "The Emerald Isle" would not be so, and I rather suspect the planet might well be poorer for it.

One of the best bumper-stickers I've ever seen was, "Stop Continental Drift!"

Wasn't that once Heart's Content on Newfoundland?

Hear hear. Save that I must do so some several degrees cooler than you put up with.

Thanks for that link, Carl. The Monty Python team were boundary benders in their day, and I notice that the 'Hitler' sketch was subtitled in German for their consumption. When I was watching their TV a great many WW2 British & American films were screened with all dialogue dubbed into German.

10 inches of the fluffy stuff sounds like cross-country skiing from your front door weather to me. We did it two winters in a row recently, but we probably won't get enough to play with again for another 40 years!

BTW. Attached is a pic of that spinning ball I mentioned earlier showing just how daft it would be to build a bridge from Ireland to Newfoundland. Not even the Japanese have tried anything like that.

Well, its obvious there will never be any general agreement on this topic. I will confess to wearing pantyhose in the winter to keep warm, and I even wear them under pants if I am going to be outside for an extended period of time (@ football games). Its great because, with socks over the hose, no one can tell. A nice side effect from my skirt wearing that would not have occurred to me previously.

[And, as an aside, I participate in several other forums and, somehow, the issue of bare legs vs hosiery (for women) always comes up. And opinions on those boards are also divided somewhat down the middle; perhaps a bit more than half of the women prefer bare legs, but its close to 50:50. Ditto for men's opinions on which they prefer. One thing that does seem clear is that bare legs are much more common than, say, 30 years ago when most women wore hose of some sort. For this I am quite pleased, although, again, probably nearly 50% of you are not.]

And thank the Lord for that! I am often disheartened by the general, lemming like, uniformity that so drably suits up conservative (read unadventurous) men across the globe. The whole thing harks back to the Puritans in their steeple hats, linen collars and prurient attitudes. OH for a metaphorical Restoration. What a wonderful world it would be if we all were free to make our own sartorial choices and, also, freely accepting of other's decisions in this respect. Whether I shave my legs, wear hose or let the hairs stay lush, it's a personal decision and afree right not to be dictated to by condemnation or "shaming" (both a form of bullying in any case)

It's been cold for San Francisco (~50F) but calm and sunny. I finally made it out and down to my local laundromat wearing an ankle length black skirt Sunday morning. I was wearing cable knit cotton over the knee socks under.

[OK, what happened to the "reply with quote" function on this board?? Either it has disappeared, or I am just plain blind, because I can't find it!]

Anyway, Sarongman, I agree with you completely. I didn't mean to imply that this disagreement was in any way a problem.

Whoa! Now the "reply with quote" works! Apparently this is browser dependent, because I am now using my old browser, whereas it dosn't work with my new one. Any thoughts?

Anyway, as I said before, good comment.

Lower Right edge of the screen IN the message block you want to quote - fine print Quote - that will do yah !
Quote more than one source I think you have to copy and paste !?!
And then there are those strange blocks above in a blank message field: a bold "B" in a box; an italic 'i"; an underlined "u" and another way to Quote.
I am not terribly good at this but I can muddle through and mess things up with the best.
See if that works !
