Making the effort....inspiration for us.
Re: Making the effort....inspiration for us.
Uncle Al,
You do cut a very fine figure in that photo of yourself and your magnificent entertainment facility. Burns from a soldering iron are not what one plans ahead and I do hope your fingers recovered so you could entertain all your friends again.
I have no doubt that the unseen 'guts' underneath that amazing console are complicated in the extreme. Not being a committee person, I have never held any sort of public or Society office and for me it's far too late to start now!
I look forward to hearing your toccata and fugue based on the theme: 'Star-spangled Banner' !
I'm a bit miffed by that pic taken before cataract surgery. It alters one's appearance not one jot, but Boy! doesn't it half miraculously restore one's youthful visual acuity, and how! I had mine done in 2017.

Re: Making the effort....inspiration for us.
I'm digging up the topic. Recently (3-4 weeks ago), when I was at work I did take a photo of a woman in the street (no idea why). I was saying that where I go to work, women are nicely dressed up. She was far from my building, the photo is true to what I could really distinguish from where I was, and her face is already blurred enough to make her impossible to recognize so I allow myself to post the photo here (it gives an example of what I talk about). Her attire is quite simple but elegant, and she's only in the "top 10%" of the best dressed up women I can see there. Or maybe "top 5%", I'm probably biased as I tend to only look at women of my age.

Top 5% easily, possibly higher. A gem in the wild. So very, very rare in this day and age.

The skirt is very nice and shows real style, since it is not easy to wear a full length skirt in the middle of the day.

Re: Making the effort....inspiration for us.
OK, I bite -- why not? When the temperature drops, so does my hemline. The other issues with full length remain the same regardless of the hour -- save looking a bit formal when at the local market, or self-serve gas refill!
Re: Making the effort....inspiration for us.
Well as you say, it is a bit formal, but I was thinking in the city with escalators, kerbs and such, you would have to know what you are doing especially in white material. I have to say though, as I type this, I am thinking, may be I should give it a try it the form of fact finding?

Re: Making the effort....inspiration for us.
There is a reason a lot of long commoner dresses back in the olden days used to have a thick hem band, so you could replace it when it was worn down from use.
You should try it out Mouse! I should too mind you.

Re: Making the effort....inspiration for us.
I cannot recall using an escalator when in an floor length skirt, often stairs or elevator etc and one quickly learns to grab a handful of fabric on front, maybe with just a couple of fingers when hands are full -- but that becomes second nature along with the 'knee lift' step that sometimes suffices.
I don't have any in white -- I'm reluctant to wear white in any length though a I have a couple.
Nice bit about 'heavy hems' Seb, I have stepped on mine more than hems tolerate at times too! It is a bit embarrassing when you have a loose elastic waistband and pull your own skirt down! I got the rear of a long one when checking under the car recently -- it would have been a case of plumber's butt had folks been watching.
Mostly I have found the benefits outweigh the hassles and it is kind of fun to wear something that tends to grab attention anyway -- and isn't that part of making the effort?!

You are so right.
I have a longish skirt with an elasticated waist band which can give builders bum, if you are not careful. Must get round to putting in better elastic.

Yes well, I may have bought a long white skirt from Amazon...and gone shopping in Tescos yesterday...and got my skirt caught in the shopping trolly wheel.....

I am not saying I look as good as Spirou003's lady, but this is my humble attempt. I also was totally surprised to get my skirt trapped in the wheels of the shopping trolly twice, showing that you do need some skill to wear this type of skirt, which I am obviously sadly lacking. Not sure escalators are a good idea in this outfit.

You've certainly inspired and empowered the bloke with the trolley in the backgroundMouse wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2024 4:41 amYes well, I may have bought a long white skirt from Amazon...and gone shopping in Tescos yesterday...and got my skirt caught in the shopping trolly wheel.....

I'm the reverse, when the mercury drops, my hemlines go UP! Of course, by that time, I'm also wearing tights to keep my legs warm.

I don't want to LOOK like a woman, I just want to DRESS like a woman.
Re: Making the effort....inspiration for us.
Haha, well I guess its a new learning curve! Looks nice, might be better with white tights though, shame the inner skirt only goes to the knee.

Re: Making the effort....inspiration for us.
Well I took the next step in investigating long white skirt wearing and took my skirt to London for the day. http://www.skirtcafe.org/forums/viewtop ... 31#p264131 for the London meet-up http://www.skirtcafe.org/forums/viewtop ... 10#p264110
I found that I could use escalators

and steps

on the underground with out mishap.

So my fear for Spirou003's lady in the white skirt may have been misplaced. I enjoyed my time in the city with a long white skirt and would not dissuade anybody from wearing similar, they are a lot of fun. Not entirely sure white is a good colour to drag along the floor in a city, but that was part of the brief. As if to show me up, as I sat in my seat on the tube, this lady walked into the same carriage. She did not take a seat, but stood and swirled her skirt as the train moved. It was obvious from her smiles to her friend and actions in moving the skirt, that she was enjoying her skirt and the fact she was wearing it. As you can see in the picture, it was a loverly skirt in a grey colour....
