Old Men ?

I am (almost) 63 and think I am in the category that I don't care what others think - I just DO what I want. And if that means wearing a skirt, so be it!

Hello Nevermore. I know that your junior member designation relates to your number of posts and I asume from the term old men that you are a younger man. I am in my mid 60's and consider old men to be somewhat older than me, so it is a relative term. Your observation is correct and question regarding demographics, interesting. Something I too have thought about and don't know the answer but put forward some hypotheses:
1. A lot of young guys are influenced by peer group pressure and not many wear skirts.
2. A lot of mature men's peers are dead or too feeble to apply pressure.
3. A lot of young people are trying to attract a mate and care what others think.
4. A lot of mature men have got over worriying what people think and do what they always wanted to do.
5. The greater the years, the greater the chance of trying on a skirt.
6. Young people have no issue with wearing something different or wayout and don't need to join a forum to gain confidence.
7. Testosterone levels decrease with age and men become more feminine.
8. Increasing dementure lowers inhibitions.
9. With age comes increasing wisdom to wear comfortable things and confidence to be one's self.
10. Young men are more into fashion and skirts are not fashionable at present.

I think it is a number of things that coincide at middle age. Ahh:

Which leads to "behavioral policing" (to borrow a term from Daryl) by women. I have noticed at least one thread about conflict with wives. The first hoop a young man has to jump through is that women expect conventional masculinity-and like others women associate skirts almost entirely with females.

Women are the gatekeepers of sex...and reproduction. If a young man doesn't appear to conform, he will almost certainly not be starting a family.

Older men, on the other hand, may already have grown offspring.



One limited exception-kilting. Some women can think outside of the box and appreciate a kilted man. But some women...some wives...can't accept even kilts.

Take a look around the characters who frequent this place: They seem to be of well above average intelligence; they seem to be highly musical which implies many things, mainly positive; and they seem erudite and well capable of communication in the written language, which is not necessarily easy to master. These facets should speak well to prospective mates. If those traits don't propagate, then the species will be poorer for it -- and we can blame "social policing" for it.

It's not just a "good idea" -- it works.

Wikpedia wouldn't accept it of course because they have a down on "individual research", but they aren't relevant here. Besides, without "individual research" we'd still be duking it out with the chimpanzees. (Hmmm... "Mano a chimpo". That's got a nice ring to it. I'll have to remember it.)

I'm 64 and think that I'm more open about such things now. To me, it seems that it is more acceptable to wear skirts and kilts now. I still can't wear a skirt to the office (thank god i work from home now, I can wear what I want). I also don't do it at some social events when it would be embarrassing to my wife (I think I am beyond embarrassment at my age.) She is supportive otherwise (assuming I don't blow it by going too far, whatever that is.)

When I came to this forum, I noticed that, in highly active members, there were many over fifty, but also some younger as well. The fact that there were relatively sane sounding men, that have been doing this for years, has been encouraging. The support has been fantastic.

I think if I was younger these days I wouldn't hesitate wearing what I want. Even full cross dressers can go where they want now. What I like to wear is tame, and I think sensible and comfortable.

Well, at 64 I still consider myself at the top end of middle age. My only care is the feelings of those close to me, mainly MOH who is only luke warm on the support. Around the house yes as long as we don't have visitors but out of the house tolerates as long as I am not with her.

If one is not a resident of London in the U.K. and was not born within the sound of Bow Bells , it is unlikely that one would be a
Cockney and be familiar with Cockney Rhyming Slang ....a butchers ...is ...a butchers hook.....a look....or ...take a look.....

Of course if one is not a Cockney one is unlikely to walk round on ...Plates of Meat.....and climb ....Apples and Pears.....

It is probably fair to say that many of the older members have been dressing as "men in skirts " for many years....
Perhaps one of the dreams of life is to survive long enough to give up work and explore skirt wearing as a fulltime life style.

When I reach Old Salt's age , I will have more stories to tell...........weeladdie
