Where is Moonshadow?????
Re: Where is Moonshadow?????
Interesting reading about "Contractual Agreement",
but I always have viewed marriage as a "Covenant"
not a "Contract".
If people of the same sex want a permanent union,
fine - find a name for it. I still view marriage as that
covenant agreement between one man and one woman.
No I am not going to howl at the moon. For eons this
is what marriage has been - go find your own name for
a union between same sex people and leave marriage
as it has been.

My view entirely, PatJ. Succinctly put.
They don't seem to be in any hurry to invent a new name for it, though.

Thanks Tom,
After posting my view - I thought I might be
banned from the board.

Not at all. So long as everyone remains civil and respectful there's no problem -- and these are issues that should be aired, but should be aired in the spirit of debate not of flaming.PatJ wrote:After posting my view - I thought I might be banned from the board.
Getting banned actually takes a bit of work, and before that happens there's virtually always a warning about it.
In other words, if you behave like a civilised adult things here are almost always fine; behave like a spoilt brat and you're likely in for some discipline.

Re: Where is Moonshadow?????
Why not call it a "coupling".
To me thats better than marriage as that means a man and a woman.

Re: Where is Moonshadow?????
That's an interesting idea, but it's awfully close to railway terminology. (Of course there is the notion of "married pairs" of rail-cars where each car has specific functions and they're not designed to be easily uncoupled.)Franinskirts wrote:Why not call it a "coupling".
At least in the traditional sense of the word; however, "we live in 'interesting times'"...To me thats better than marriage as that means a man and a woman.

Re: Where is Moonshadow?????
When I think of a coupling, I imagine a fitting to join to male ends together. So I suppose it's appropriate!

Re: Where is Moonshadow?????
One definition of a coupling is, the pairing of two items. So it is appropriate. An amusing one is ( meant for electricity ), "the association of two circuits or systems in such a way that power may be transferred from one to the other" and "a device or expedient to ensure this". Say no more ....

Then there's the extension cord. It has a male and female end.Sinned wrote:One definition of a coupling is, the pairing of two items. So it is appropriate. It's a gluepot.

Re: Where is Moonshadow?????
A gluepot, never heard that one before. Sounds remarkably like a very early example of what the computer industry does in all the time in overloading existing words to cover a an idea or thing that the borrowed word brings up a mental image by association. A bit like the word kernel to describe the inner core of the computer's operating system much as the inner core of a nut.

Re: Where is Moonshadow?????
In case it wasn't clear, I invented the association with an extension cord as an attempt at continuing the humour of the thread that seems to have fallen a bit flat.
As for overloading the word, well, I would suspect it comes from vulgar (in the modern sense) folk looking to insult. That record pre-dates the vacuum tube by nearly a century, so the computer folk are rather late to the game.

Well, one could use an extension cord to bind two people together.

The tag on some of my cords state that they can also be used for strangulation!crfriend wrote:Well, one could use an extension cord to bind two people together.
Not sure if it's meant as a WARNING or and IDEA....?!

Re: Where is Moonshadow?????
