Can't quite see the logic in your story of Robert. We could say he failed to acknowledge you to avoid being associated with a weirdo ... but I'm sure that was not what you were trying to tell us.

Re: Do folks notice or not?
Yes, that's a possibility, but I was giving him the benefit of the doubt! He seemed to be concentrating more on his own "to do" list than on anyone else around him. Just like most other people. Out shopping, most of the women are in jeans, and most of the rest are in short skirts and tights. An ankle-length skirt is quite an unusual shape to see, so I reckoned that would make me more likely to draw surprised glances. But not even my friend Robert, who had spent half the weekend with a man in a long skirt, seemed to notice.
Keep on skirting,

On my recent cross-country train trip, a friendly Amtrak car attendant asked in happy voice "Are you enjoying wearing that kilt?" I answered "It's the most comfortable thing in the world!", to which he added "You must have some Irish in you!" Caught a bit by surprise, I answered "Uh... not exactly!" Irish?
When I heard about skirting, I jumped in with both feet!

Not at all, Jim... a Mtn Hardwear Elkommando.
It was the first time I've heard someone connect "kilt" with "Irish" instead of "Scottish"...

Re: Do folks notice or not?
Had a positive experience at a Whole Foods grocery store. A woman, with about 8-year old son, came up and was peering closely at my skirt (brown synthetic suede-like A-line, a little below the knee). She said "I was just seeing if you're wearing a utility kilt." Me: "No, this is just a skirt, I don't even have a Utilikilt" She: "it's great; we're kilt fans!" Me: "It's so comfortable. There are a lot of guys who like wearing skirts and kilts and just want it to be a normal thing." She: "I know... I find them attractive." Me (leaving): "Have a great afternoon... and thanks for asking."

I was in town today with SWMBO and was wearing a cream knee length skirt. We passed a woman coming in the other direction and she gave me the up-down-up look and, as our eyes met, a friendly smile which I, of course, reciprocated. I believe her attitude may well have been the same as STIs encounter.

A few days ago, I was at the store, picking up a few items. A woman, probably in her 50's, passed me, stopped, then said that she liked my outfit... Was wearing this outfit...

Re: Do folks notice or not?
I am trying to get my head around this;
I have always gone for the denim skirt, thinking that tiered 'soft' and extremely comfortable skirts like that one look feminine and would look incongruous on a man..
HOWEVER:
That skirt, that whole look, looks great.
I must think again about softer more comfortable and flowing skirts, pity about the lack of pockets. And no, I am not going to start carrying a purse or bag, I am not used to carrying accessories like that and would only leave them behind constantly.
(This post might look a bit incoherent, a bottle and a half of wine followed by some clumsy editing probably doesn't help!) Still, I think it looks great.

Re: Do folks notice or not?
Very often it's not so much about the skirt, but rather about how the entire look works (or not). Recall that the skirt is but one element of an entire rig, and it's often the other components that can make or break a look. So, I do not find it difficult to "get my head around this" at all.Big and Bashful wrote:I am trying to get my head around this;

I ventured forth today into a moderately unfamiliar city -- Seattle, Washington, USA -- wearing one of my slightly flashy looks (white dress shirt, black waistcoat, black tiered skirt, red petticoat, black tights, and black dress shoes. Since the skirt lacks pockets and the waistcoat's pockets aren't up to things like a wallet, I also wore the custom-built purse that Sapphire made for me. And a camera. The purse was slung cross-body and the camera around my neck; both were mostly hidden by the jacket I had on since it was slightly raw and rainy. I didn't receive a lick of trouble from anybody. All a bag is is an "off-body" carrying appurtenance in the same way that a pocket is an "on-body" one (more or less).I must think again about softer more comfortable and flowing skirts, pity about the lack of pockets. And no, I am not going to start carrying a purse or bag, I am not used to carrying accessories like that and would only leave them behind constantly.

Re: Do folks notice or not?
Thanks. I usually wear a fleece vest (waistcoat) with pockets with the skirts I wear, even the pocketed denim skirts and my utilikilt. If it's cold out, then I'll do a fleece sweatshirt and down vest or a parka, all of which have pockets. On hot days, I usually just hold my wallet, keys, and phone in one hand, or may wear a small zippered pouch meant for a multimeter on a belt wrapped around my waist, with my wallet and phone inside that.Big and Bashful wrote:I am trying to get my head around this;

Re: Do folks notice or not?
I've also toyed with the idea of using something other than a purse as a purse. Like maybe a backpack hooked on one shoulder, a camera bag, or an ammo pouch. Messenger bags seems to be a common style in, "man bags." But I've only thought about it, never done it.Kilted_John wrote:...On hot days, I usually just hold my wallet, keys, and phone in one hand, or may wear a small zippered pouch meant for a multimeter on a belt, with my wallet and phone inside that...
OTOH, I do often carry camera bags as camera bags. Hmm.

Yeh, camera bag or laptop bag would work, I do often carry something like that, but not all the time.

Why not just carry a purse? They come in many (hundreds) of styles so it isn't too difficult to find one that will efficiently carry your belongings.Big and Bashful wrote:Yeh, camera bag or laptop bag would work, I do often carry something like that, but not all the time.
