As cold as a cold thing and then some, well, below 0 degrees celcius anyway, ice and snow rule with my Depot basically closed down due to hazardous roads.
The outlook is colder, but mainly dry I think. I do like a proper winter, having a Jeep helps though! :D

App. -12 C last night and about 50cm snow over the last 7 days. The best snow we have had in about 20 years, no matter what the U.K. doomsayers say.

Well it is business as usual here in Minnesota USA.
You no like - wait 10 minutes and we will make it worse !
Temperature 20F
Winds out of the NE 8 mph
Windchill index 10F (not too bad nothing to write home about)
Humidity 83%
Barometric Pressure 30.11
Visibility 1 to 1.5 miles - nothing to class as a blizzard.
Snow falling - accumulation 6-7 inches (Fortunately it is the dry type not good for snow balls or snowmen -
Wet is the heart attack variety good for making snow balls and icing roads and bridges)
Nothing like western New York (lake effect snow) or the unseasonable UK weather of recent.
After the snow temperatures to plument into the single digits with winds causing below zero windchill factors.

Down here at sea level thawing started yesterday, with rain helping. Snow now ice, but thawing continuing today.

Cold snap is set to continue apparently.

Up here in the giddy heights inland, where we're at all of 81 meters ( that's 250-odd feet) above sea level there is still some 8" of level snow everywhere, but they've cleared the main roads, so we can get about. My first mile, though, from my front door is white hard-packed snow and quite difficult for two-wheel-drive, especially my old Merc. with it's engine at the wrong end & not over the rear wheels, so my technique of keeping enough momentum without overcooking it is getting more refined by the day.
We're still getting minus 8 or 10 overnights, with a slight thaw each afternoon. We think the snow has done its worst for the time being, But of course, the Winter's young, yet........

Kirbstone,
Glad to see you are still practicing your snow driving techniqu, since I started driving, nearly 40 cars ago, everytime the roads get interesting I go out to play, it doesn't half help to know what your car can and will do on ice or snow. It also helps to get the seat of your 'pants' calibrated so that you can feel the car reacting and sliding, hopefully in a controlled manner!
Temperature here is back below freezing, the sheet of snow on my old BMW is now a small glacier, it has slid 18" without breaking and is hanging over the back of the car, I have never seen that happen before! At least I still have water today. Must leave a tap running to stop the water main freezing.

I think all Beemers should come with a small attached glacier as standard. Might slow 'em down a bit! Fortunately most of them obey the unwritten Highway Code directive at mini-roundabouts....The guy driving the Merc. has priority. Ask any German.

We drilled a 70-meter well here to get nice water, but all the gubbins feed into the barn first, then on to the house. When we get consistently below minus ten degrees the kitchen tap won't flow and we must conserve water. Fortunately, the afternoon slight thaw has gotten everything moving again.

However it is important to remember that although we allow BMW and Mercedes owners to argue about who owns the road the correct answer is Volvo drivers; after all, everyone knows that the guy in the Volvo is not looking out of the window, so it's best to stay out of the way :D

Have fun,

Ian.

That being the FWD or AWD Volvo driver. Most RWD Volvo drivers don't have their heads up their arses... :-)

FWD (a lightly tweaked 310BHP V70 T5 in my case) and my backside is by far the safest place for my head when I'm "making progress" :-). I do enjoy watching those German car drivers squirm when they pull out to pass a parked vehicle and realise that the car coming towards them is not going to kowtow to their belief that everyone should stay out of their way.

Have fun,

Ian.

PS Last RWD Volvo I had, my head was usually under the bonnet / hood; there is a reason why the "classic" cars evolved into modern ones.

I liked all my Volvos, all rwd, the 760GLE I rate as one of my favourite cars, plenty of power, good gearbox, comfy, excellent grip on corners Only problem was that it wasn't an estate, there should be a law that all large Volvos should be estates (Sorry, I suppose that is station wagon for the Americans etc.).
The BMW I have retired because I got sick of expensive bits breaking, good car to drive but it is a 5 series 2 litre which really needs more engine. Never had a Merc.
I am used to the hate poured on Volvo drivers, although the people who seemed to be trying to kill me when out on my bikes where all in big 4*4's rather than Volvos. I have not come across this anti Merc and anti BMW sentiment before, apart from maybe the sales reps in their 3 series and certain racist slurs against the same model. Oh and drug pusher references for certain Mercs.

Maybe you have a point!

Forgetting motors for the moment, Our recent weather threw up some pics that are remarkably similar to those taken only last January. The last time weather like this came to our parts so early (Nov/Dec.) was in 1890 !!
It wasn't difficult to decide not to go boating on our little lake last w/end, &
Barretstown 81. Jolly fine boating weather.jpg
Not being able even to reach the road with either of our vehicles, we set off and visited the local shop on our cross-country skis. A five mile round trip. Needless to say we did ourselves a nice Gluehwein on our return home. Note the Alpine background!

Snowy! C-c-c-c-old!
A 3" snow fall Sat. followed by minus wind chills today.
A -13 wind chill when I woke up today. Br-r-r-r-r-r-r-!
Glad I didn't have to go to work. Sorry that my wife still does.
It's dangerous for me with my breathing problems to go outside now.
Getting tired of being "house bound" by the weather and my health!
Hey!
Every one down south. Please face north and wave a fan! Or turn on some good, strong electric fans facing north!
Anything with warmth will help.
Maybe an El Nino would help. Or is it El Nina? I can't remember. But one means warm, mild winters.
Who needs snow?

I must admit I am enjoying a proper winter. Last Winter had a good cold spell as well, but the normal Scottish West coast gales and constant rain depresses me, this bitter winter is what Winter is supposed to be! far more fun! Just like when I was a kid and did sledgey things in winter.

I was watching a documentary today, in the past 25 years, the water flow in Scotland's rivers has increased by 40% due to the increasingly wet weather. That is rather worrying as the annual rainfall figure I remember, at my workplace, was from around 1990. 2.04 metres then, no wonder it never stops raining here now! If the increase continues, in another ten years I will be able to fly with nothing more than a set of waterwings!
