Most blend in skirts
Re: Most blend in skirts
We might as well accept that we are iconoclasts, because we are. Indeed, we ought to take pride in being iconoclasts.

Re: Most blend in skirts
I'm sure that few of the men that wear their skirts out & about are trying to blend into the scenery. If we're out there, then we're happy to be who we are and to do the things we have chosen to do.
Perhaps what we are trying to say is that, denim, with its everyday banality, its plain down-to-earth appearance, its being the antithesis of the frilly fly-away look that was common to women's wear until the 60s, will not jolt the public's feelings as much as satin and silk might. Although women wear denim today, there are still enough images around of women in lace or less, for denim to remain associated with men. It has not ceased to be menswear just because it has been adopted by women ... at certain times and in certain places.

If you take pride in being an iconoclast, this could be a source of self-esteem, independent of others, such as the boss at work. Or even society in general.

Re: Most blend in skirts
Didn't we have this discussion before, in the thread "Do folks notice or not?" And probably several others before it?
There are no blend-in skirts for men. None. There are only different degrees of sticking out like a sore thumb. Many people do not notice, but that's because they are concentrating on something else. Everybody who is paying attention to the people around them notices your skirt. People have lots of reasons for not reacting visibly: politeness; dumbfoundedness; embarrassment; confusion; employment in service industries; being too busy with whatever they are doing ... but pretty much all of them notice.
How often have you walked by some people and overheard one them saying, after you have passed, "That guy is wearing a skirt"? Well I reckon many others just wait a little longer before commenting, or do it more quietly.
If you want to wear a skirt without being noticed as unusual, become a TV and learn to pass as a woman. As a man in a skirt, just enjoy the attention and the feeling of being a maverick!

Well said, SkS. That hits the nail on the head and should draw a line under that thread. As to strutting out as a CD, well, I'll leave that to those who dare! I've only actually seen one, ever, and that was in Hamburg Airport while I was waiting for a departure. He/she just couldn't walk properly in heels and that's what drew my attention.

Re: Most blend in skirts
I think we deceive ourselves assuming that our attire is unnoticed whether it is common denim or the most flamboyant silk. The difference would only be in the motivations for our fashion choices presumed by those who observe us. Somehow this discussion transcended into one about the virtue of standing apart for our select style. I do not skirt only to be different, though that is not without validity or appeal. I do not skirt for the comfort of the garments, though that is certainly a benefit. I do not skirt to express femininity, though I relate to women on an inner level. I do not skirt to shock or offend conventionality and societal expectations, though it pleases me to do so. I do not skirt for any fetishistic desire, though I won't deny that part of my psyche. I skirt for none of those reasons and for all of those reasons, and even more; things that would require years of expensive psychoanalysis to fully identify. And it doesn't matter. I skirt, therefore I am! It is part of who I am, and whether I wear a jeans skirt or a ruched floorsweeper just doesn't matter. I don't expect to be unnoticed, but I am not seeking the attention of rubbernecked gawkers either. Don't ask me what I expect from my style, just get used to it.
As a matter of fact, the sun DOES shine out of my ...

Exactly. And some -- a minority, yes, but some -- actually find it interesting and like it.skirtyscot wrote:There are no blend-in skirts for men. None. Normality is nothing to strive for.

If you don't blend in, perhaps you will inspire a few to try skirts themselves.

That IS part of the point. If you don't get out there yourself and start "being the change you want to see in the world" then you'll have a very long wait for somebody else to do it.Grok wrote:If you don't blend in, perhaps you will inspire a few to try skirts themselves.

Is the underlying question "Which skirts are least likely to be laughed at?"

Perhaps, but a strong second contender might be, "Which skirts do I have enough self-confidence to wear?"couyalair wrote:Is the underlying question "Which skirts are least likely to be laughed at?"
The difference is whether we wear what we want or what we think others want.

Re: Most blend in skirts
For me it's a bit of both of them. There are skirts that I wear about the house that I wouldn't wear outside ( too short or have a "female" pattern like flowers ) or are a bit too girly. Aside from that of the ones that I would wear outside I wear what I want, what I think looks good on me and what I have the confidence to wear. I certainly don't consciously think about what I think others would want. At least I don't think so! Getting confused now.Perhaps, but a strong second contender might be, "Which skirts do I have enough self-confidence to wear?"

I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

This is an interesting drill-down into the psyche, and looks like it's worth pursuing.Caultron wrote:Perhaps, but a strong second contender might be, "Which skirts do I have enough self-confidence to wear?"couyalair wrote:Is the underlying question "Which skirts are least likely to be laughed at?"

Certainly, if we were to only wear what we think others would want, then skirts would be off the table completely, so there must therefore be a strong component of self-confidence in the mix as well.
My personal take on the matter is that each of us should adopt overall styles (as in "head to toe" looks) and then cultivate those to the very best of our abilities. This is one of the reasons I can carry stuff that other folks here would likely recoil from (e.g. velvet and lace); it dovetails so well with other elements I use that nobody questions it, at least not in a derogatory or insulting manner.

Re: Most blend in skirts
Right now, bar one, I don't own a skirt that hasn't been "out" with me in it.
That one is black, all round pleated and short, but no more than some of the others I've worn in town. I just wouldn't be comfortable with it so it remains for in-house wear.
I have never set out to "blend", I reckon that's futile if I'm to wear a skirt. I do make a point, though, of not copying any of my female colleagues. This is not so much "what others want", more my way of keeping my individuality.
The irony is that I've seen many more skirts around the office since I started full-time skirting, are the women takng a cue from me?
I've no real idea and no, I'm not about to ask.
As a further note , I was only skirted for 2 days this week, Tuesday and today. I felt "lousy" and could not be bothered with any effort.
Today, felt somewhat better and wore my plain black one, actually chosen for work. There were no comments regarding that but a few regarding my health.
In fact, I haven't had a "skirt" conversation for months now, so do I blend in?
Steve.
