Grok,

You have 'teasers' in quotes ( " " ) yet, where are the 'links' to the information :?:

Scroll down a few paragraphs below Figure 2. Note the comments regarding the naked mole rat. The rodent shares with the bowhead whale the traits-relative to most other mammals-of low body temperature and low metabolic rate.

My attempt at linking to the article seems to have failed.

This was a PMC/PubMed article, National Institute of Health. The title is "Insights into the Evolution of Longevity from the Bowhead Whale."

In mammals, lower body temperature seems to be associated with lower metabolism-a lower speed with which life processes proceed. It has sometimes been commented that cold blooded reptiles have an advantage compared to warm blooded mammals-with their lower metabolism, reptiles can survive famine conditions more readily than similar sized mammals, because the reptiles can get by with less food. Warm bloodedness costs us a lot.

Bowhead whales might be adapted to a lower body temperature because a lower metabolic rate helps them to survive sparse food supplies. Another adaption is, when times are good, to store nutrients in a thick layer of blubber. Blubber has another effect in that it functions something like a blanket, retaining body heat. Which would tend to work against having a lower body temperature. But this can be made to work because this species swims in ice water.

Why does this species out live other whales? The other species, it turns out, have body temperatures similar to humans, about 37 degrees celsius.

The aging process may be slowed down because life processes in general are slowed, allowing the organism to remain viable for longer. Conceivably, some sort of drug therapy could suppress body temperature in humans, allowing a longer health span.
