I joined there 3 days ago. I'm on there as SkirtedMan and have been accepted by prolly 99% of the mostly young to middle age people there. The rare but there nasty young woman that thinks men should never wear skirts because skirts are for women only. Or ask if I'm a fag, or crossdresser get a smile from me and a question...but, but, but, but, you're wearing pants..aren't pants for men only? Or is a skirt on a man a man's garment because a man is wearing it just as a pair of pants on a woman is a woman's garment because a woman is wearing them? That and the statement that I'm not mad or cross or angry, and I'm definitely not an English cigarette usually get her wandering off talking to herself...Overall it's a fun place to visit and chat for hours in open chat rooms. My char has 8 skirts to choose from, hair that looks a lot like my real hair, just about 4 inches longer than mine, the color is correct. AND I'm SKINNY in my avatar...YAYAYAY Give me your IMVU name and I'll add you to my friends list. 8)
I realized they had open chat rooms for anyone and WE could go there and chat directly anytime we wanted to without leaving messages like here. We could make a time, get our own room, go in with up to 10 people and chat away about our favorite subject. They have hundreds of different skirts for males. same for hair styles, tops, shoes, bling etc etc...

I registered with IMVU to see what it was all about. The software let me choose a black shirt and an urban camo kilt, which is what I happen to be wearing in the real world today, but then it let me keep the black shirt I had chosen for my avatar but defaulted the bottom half to black trousers.
Quite frankly even if it had allowed me to keep the kilt for the avatar, I would not have been logging onto IMVU again anyway as I found all the pop ups and tabs most irritating.
On top of that, the software download was more than 300 megabites and as my computer is quite full already the addition of IMVU really slowed it down.
So I have now uninstalled IMVU.
If any of you want to chat and to see the real skirted me on my webcam rather than an avatar you can always call me on Skype.

I joined, name "ChrisMcKesson" but it seems to be way too slow to be usable. (I've been waiting several minutes and still don't have the "my room" screen painted yet.) I also can't find any skirts in the "dress" / "bottoms" inventory.

Perhaps I'll try again sometime when I have a higher bandwidth connection.

All the best,

Chris, try again. On my system the My Room screen loads in about 15 seconds or less. This screen loads in conjunction with a mini navigation screen called My Messenger. You can find your buddies from a list and avatars of visitors to your home page, which opens in Internet Explorer. It isn't difficult, but it is a pretty large program - 222 meg on my system - so that could slow down some computers; I have a 50 gig C drive and still have 36 gig unused.

It's a fun diversion, although I find I'd much rather correspond on this site with friends whose personalities and interests I have come to know over time than to try to chat with complete strangers. That's actually a bit stressful to me, as I don't type too fast...or think too fast for that matter... and find I have little to say to the 18 yr olds who get randomly sent to me on the chat mode. I guess i need to get more specific with the age and sex i chat with - the software lets you do that. All in all, i'd much rather be on a forum where i can collect my thoughts and communicate them in entire words and sentences. I'm just too old to deal with the "text" generation, it seems. There are many group forums on the site and I hope at some point to establish one for male alternative fashion if we get enough interested correspondents on there to start up.

Anyway, I'm having fun dressing up my avatar; I guess i'm getting in touch with my inner little girl. There is a big selection of male skirts although many lean pretty far toward the kinky end of the spectrum...but that's allright for my own alter-ego.

The thing that bothers me about IMVU is the idea of a potential progressive divergence from reality. My avatar has the body of a teenage Philipino (don't ask me how I got it...I need to go back to the optometrist, i guess) and looks great in whatever you put on him. I can see how someone might get obsessed in living anonomously in a virtual world where you are always young and beautiful and don't bring any of the baggage from your real life. Like booze or heroin, it could become an unhealthy escapist feel-good habit (or the ultimate safe sex) awaiting those dealing with a life of bad days or diappointment. That troubles me (but not yet enough to quit!)

I must admit, having played with it last week, I prefer using messenger or the yahoo equivalent. I just didn't see any point in the visual doodads or the random chat offers that constantly bothered me. It was very slow and I didn't like the control 'system' which sucks. I'm sticking with text only Messenger, maybe even with the video calling, now there's a thing!

I have an account but use it without the chat just to play around with clothes for the most part. Actually, the only people I have chatted with there in the last year are my husband, fun way to spend time together when away from home or a girlfriend of mine who is a transgender woman. In her case it is an ideal use of an avatar chat giving her a body she wishes she was born with and an opportunity to have a large wardrobe inexpensively.

I agree with the others that have said a simple text only chat is more to their tastes. When I want to talk with my friends online I think of them as they are and like to focus on their thoughts rather than trying to keep track of little talk bubbles above people's heads. I think there is a text chat button somewhere in the IMVU window but I can't remember if I ever used that or not. Anyway, there are lots of text only ways to chat online that do run simpler and smoother.

Though for IMVU play I'll share what I've learned in the past year. First the daily links for credits, promotional credits only so you can only spend them on your avatar but not for buying gifts for others which takes credits bought with real money. Make sure you are logged in to do these.
[*]Free Spin- may give you nothing, 17, 132, or 5000 credits and can be done once every 24 hours[*] http://www.imvu.com/catalog/web_spinfree.php
[*]View the New Products Page which gives you 50 credits and can be done once every 24 hours[*] http://www.imvu.com/catalog/products_new.php

Also when looking at products make use of the "Try It" button to view the item on your avatar. I have much more in my wish list there than my bought inventory because just using the wish list as a way to keep track of what I like to put on works for me. Since I use IMVU to play by myself putting different outfits together I don't need to buy them to enjoy the pieces.

Sasquatch, I too am wondering about the effect the looks of these avatars has on teens. While escapism is fun you don't want them getting into the trap that what they really look like is not good enough. While I don't know about male options there the curvaceous avatar for women is something I've gotten for times I want to look more like myself. As in real life though clothes for one body size won't fit the other so it can be tough finding something I like that isn't too tight and tarty made for the curvaceous avatar.

On the other hand I see avatar communities like IMVU as a safe way for men to have the experience of being skirted in public even if that is not something they do in real life. As Skip mentioned, there are accepting people out there and that is good to know. Sometimes too accepting perhaps, skirts can be seen as a kink and that might be attention you don't want.

Skirt Chaser,
The male avatars all have bodies like Michael Phelps or Mikail Baryshnikov, although I noticed that there is a catergory of clothing choices that offer beer bellies...not sure why, maybe some find that sexy? I've found that my alter-ego dresses much kinkier than I would have believed!

This all sounds fascinating, however at my old dialup ( currently running at 31.2 kbps) access is, if not impossible, probably too maddening to be enjoyable. Going off topic- is anyone using satellite broadband and, if so, what have their experiences been? :?:

Is Satellite broadband the same as DSL? If so, that's what I've been using for 9 years now. I get it from AT&T for $21.95 a month. It's very fast and powerful. I just recently had my 7 year old computer go blooey and have purchased a new Dell and my first flat screen monitor..(love it). Actually, the old computer that bombed was faster than the new Dell is. Not a lot, but faster. :alien:

I'm sure they are sorry for the random ads and popups but they pay real money to host that site, I guess they want their money back with a profit, dirty moneygrubbing democrats...

I thought that those on IMVU might appreciate this article from MSNBC:

I have been sitting around today without much important to do so I thought that I'd play around on this site and check out all the clothes.

Under the heading "Mens Clothes" sub catagory "Men's Tops" and scrolling down to see what kind of shirts were offered, I discovered they also offer "men's dresses". Don't get excited about this because most are fetish type clothes intended for crossdressers, but this discovery suprised me.

If I were a kid again, this site would be very fun to play on.

I've asked quite a few people in IMVU what age they were, surprisingly most are in their middle 30's to middle 50's...go figger. At least they are in the rooms I frequent. my favorite room is "Brains Required"..where they don't allow vulgar language or any untoward moves, threats or unfriendly interaction. They also don't allow actions or pets. Both take up too much power and cause lagging. I'm 67 but do have some fun on that site lately. :alien:
