Sorry Lar,Bravehearts.us wrote:Some of these are nothing but strings. I have a whole roll of string in the garage. I could save myself a lot of money and just start wearing it. LOL
That must have lost something in the journey across the big puddle, I don't understand the point you're making.
Have fun,
Ian.

I had a varicose veins op in 1993. After the op I needed leg support and gradually I went from surgical tights, to thing highs with a suspender, to knee highs. I now find I get ample support from kilt hose or rugby socks, with the turn down and garter just below knee. Flight socks do the job too, but as they aren't long enough to turn down the top over a garter I tend to only wear these if circumstances dictate a trousered day.

Carl, crfriend wrote:It's "varicose", and don't worry about it... You are absolutely right, though, on the fact that the prescription stockings (compression stockings) are rather hideous -- it's the very heavy fabric they're made from that does that.
The key to this is to get the size right. I started wearing knee-highs a couple of months ago following a suggestion from Binx. The first ones were too small and slipped down until they were little longer than regular socks -- hardly what I wanted; but, the second try was with the larger size and those have worked out very well (I've got size 12s, BTW). They're more comfortable than regular socks (no bulk to speak of) and surprisingly warm. I tend towards longer skirts, so the upper band doesn't show, either.
I can't speak to long stockings (thigh-highs, either "stay-ups" or ones that require extra "hardware"), but I suspect the same thing will hold true -- only more so; if you don't get 'em long enough, they will slip down. I'm given to understand that they work better with shaved legs, too (the hair functioning as a lubricant).
If I remember correctly, I may've actually been the person who suggested the sheer knee-high stockings. In the summer, they can actually be cooler than walking around with bare legs. I do find that the lighter colors actually look fine with knee-length or shorter skirts, since they don't look like you're wearing one of those knee support braces that are essentially a band that goes below the patella, which can be an issue with the black, dark brown, or navy blue sheer knee-highs. Shaving is a good idea, in that it allows the band to grip properly, and doesn't show a pattern of leg hair underneath. If you are required to wear leg hair, either by family members, or don't like the idea of shaving, then try opague knee socks. Either heavier trouser socks or go with cotton or acrylic knee socks.
For sheer knee-highs, I tend to go with the Nordstrom store-brand knee-highs. They tend to last longer than the Hanes or L'eggs brands, and also come in a slightly thicker nylon support version, which does provide the right amount of support below the patella to keep it in place.
Trouser socks are usually the Spanx brand, and usually the two-tone type, where the band is black and the leg is either navy or dark brown. Look very nice with a skirt. Not very sheer.
For regular knee socks, I tend to buy them from http://www.sock-dreams.com. They have many different types and patterns that can look good with just about any skirt or kilt out there. When I need kilt hose, however, I usually visit the local kiltmaker and just buy them there. My wool tanks tend to look a lot better with proper kilt hose and the garter flashes.

Yet another "senior moment".
Too right, and I happily stand corrected. I also, probably again, pass along hearty thanks for the suggestion. It's worked out very well.Kilted_John wrote:If I remember correctly, I may've actually been the person who suggested the sheer knee-high stockings.
You have salient points there. I'll admit to not wearing knee-highs with my minis (I did -- once -- and my wife merely laughed) but wear 'em all the time now, both under tr*users and my longer skirts. They're quite a bit more comfortable than my old socks.Kilted_John wrote:In the summer, they can actually be cooler than walking around with bare legs. Now I understand, you were not commenting on the stockings but the pictures in general. I can't say I noticed what else the models were wearing (well, that's what I'd like my mum to believe

Carl, sure thing. Ya might try something knee-length, and she probably won't laugh. Might actually think it looks good.crfriend wrote:Too right, and I happily stand corrected. I also, probably again, pass along hearty thanks for the suggestion. It's worked out very well.

I’d like to know if the women come with the stockings if I buy a pair. LOLMilfmog wrote:Thanks Lar,

Somehow I don't think any stockings or tights would look quite so alluring on me :shake:

Don't go there if you can help it!!
I had similar problems and found stockings helped but
1) They were very hot in summer
2) Suspender belts (even the proper vintage ones) needed to be tight in order to work - they were very very uncomfortable
3) Pantyhose (Haines Alive) were the best but very hot especially in the groin area - that area would become hot, sweaty and a prime candidate for jock itch (think of it as thrush for boys)
4) I wasn't going to shave my legs so I would look ridiculous in them to the extent that I couldn't actually wear skirts out. In skirts I was pushing the boundary, skirts + stockings meant I had crossed it.
My solution
1) Acupuncture - it took several months but the swelling and pain did go away and doesn't come back (except in extreme situations such as standing in a hot kitchen all day)
2) Nutrition - good quality antioxidants (preferably prescribed by a naturopath as the stuff on US shelves is so weak that it is effectively useless), quercitin, grape seeds, vitamin C, turmeric etc. Berries (even frozen) contain compounds that strengthen the blood vessels and are naturally rich in antioxidants.
3) Exercise - good long walks, treadmill, exercise bike
4) Weight management - the heavier I was, the worse the legs would become
I ditched the stockings over a year ago and rarely need the pantyhose and am much more comfortable that way.

Some Idea's
Well I can offer some idea's as I started wearing stockings after being on my feet for 10-14 hours a day - i'm not anymore thankfully. During that time the only thing that really helped were the stockings and also I were clogs - good ones with support in them.
Keep in mind that size and fit are everything. I used to war a size B but honestly a size Q fits much more comfortable in pantyhose for me.
Pantyhose can be a pain and also make you very warm (good in winter he he) , pantyhose under pants takes a bit of getting used to as the boys get very warm and tight if you know what i mean. Of course a skirt is much better. But if you are in pants a garter belt and stocking are much better than pantyhose or tights imo.
stay-ups or thi-highs are always problematic with me no matter what size I get. Either they fall completly off my leg or leave a nice red ring around my thighs
These days I wear knee-highs when i am in pants and as others mentioned - very very comfortable.
Some tights and pantyhose are great - leggs sheer to waist have nice compression and will help draw the blood up your leg and reduce swelling.
Garter belts are great with pants and offer a good solution to keep from being to tight in the groin area and alow for easy bathroom access.
But i think someone else mentioned this - careful what stockings you buy. Wal-mart has garterbelts and stockings - the garter-belts are ok if you are just learning but i dont recommend the stockings - they offer no support and are really day-sheer - crappy imo
go to pennys or any good department store and get the hanes 2-pack - u get 2 pars in the package - if one leg gets a run no -worries
they offer nice feelings and somewhat decent support. They will stay fine if you don't shave - however shaving makes for a better feeling and they will also stay better. Also these stockings are easly washed and worn many times verus the cheap ones.
anywayz - hope this helps ya

Got a pair of Walgreen's navy tights, cut them high and used the hockey garter belt: http://www.skirtcafe.org/forums/showthread.php?t=9317&page=2
Nice and warm. Now I can wear my short UKs this winter! The boots match the postal blue well.
Update: Went to the mall this evening to get some polos wearing this with my denim UK. Went great, with a few expected snickers! Had a couple of teenagers ask where I got the skirt. Wish I'd had some cards with me, but they were disappointed they were only available online. Got a nice riveted belt from Hot Topic, too. Garters held nicely getting in and out of the pickup and walking about. Pleasantly surprised and confidence up two notches.
