Any pattern suggestions?

Post by Coder »

I plan on making this skirt with some denim/canvas material for the summer:

But I just picked up a couple of yards of silk (Dupioni Silk) in a mustard/gold and a striped teal/gold. Both are amazing, and I need an appropriate pattern. The fabric, being super thin of course, would need to be lined in some way to give it structure - I don't like wispy skirts. Before I take this question to Reddit, any suggestions?

I have just posted about a man in a skirt who has a sewing channel where remake various patterns up for himself and models the finished result. viewtopic.php?t=25941

I am using a McCall's 7022 pattern, which I think is too flowy for what you want, but this channel makes up many patterns and shows them on a man. You may find one that works for you.

I have sewed skirts from just a plain rectangle, taking in 2-4 inches at the base, i.e. a trapezoid with the base 2 to 4 inches longer than the top. I just sew 2 of these trapezoid together and add a zip and waistband or facing to make a skirt.

(I don't even bother cutting out the cloth. I just fold in half, right-side together, draw the two sides and sew it in. I leave the seams in so I can alter the flare after fitting)

I find my hips and butt are not as wide as most ladies so I can get away without any darts. I found that 2 inches (which adds to +8 inch) give a more striaght line look, while 4 inches (which adds +16 inches) is the most that will give a nice flare. Any more and I will need to add pleats to distribute the excess cloth around.

For thin fabric, it's hard to make it less wipsy. Maybe you can iron on some interfacing to make it stiffer? For thinner fabric I would just wear a half slip than go through the trouble of adding a lining.
