Skirts you like but scared to wear in public
What skirts do fellow MIS own that they like but scared to wear in public?
Mine is a lovely red midi skirt with black hem and black buttons down the front but because it stands out I’m scared to wear in public. However, I bought a snake print skirt from Tesco recently and I had the same fear of wearing it in public but I plucked the courage this afternoon and wore it into town and going shopping and no one batted an eyelid. So it’s all in the head I guess.

Much of "the problem" is in our heads. So long as what we've put together looks cogent and well thought-out, nobody is likely to bat so much as an eyelash. We also all go through that phase, and once it's gone, unless we're experimenting constantly, it's usually gone for good.

I have a pencil skirt in black mock leather which I haven't dared to wear outside the house.

Outside of a dance this one would be a little frightening for me, I mean getting stuck in a door and all that.

It's not so much a particular skirt that worries me, it's more I have a large group of acquaintances who are very macho and if my clothing choices were commonly known it could wreck my involvement in the sport I love.Myopic Bookworm wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 10:14 pm I have a pencil skirt in black mock leather which I haven't dared to wear outside the house.
So my solution is I wear whatever I want on my dog walks and risk it and steer clear of the town centre. Unfortunately i have ro go through the town to get to the station. So I take my skirt with me and change on the train. Then once on the train I'm not bothered. Its all a matter of managing the risk.
Its a cop out I know but I will have a rethink if a manage to move house.
That's why I quoted you MB. Could you do the same? Change on the train. Once you are in London, who cares?

Re: Skirts you like but scared to wear in public
I’ve been wearing jeans or leggings as of late because I am helping my partner with her parents shopping and delivering the shopping to her parents which means if I wear a skirt they would think I am trans or weird and I would feel uncomfortable. My partner advises me not to wear skirts to her parents. This means that when having a break from wearing skirts I’ve started getting nervous wearing them again but everything was fine and I felt good when wearing a snake print brown skirt yesterday in town and getting used to wearing them again.crfriend wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 10:11 pm Much of "the problem" is in our heads. I love that picture, and the skirt looks really fun!timemeddler wrote: ↑Mon Sep 29, 2025 3:59 am Outside of a dance this one would be a little frightening for me, I mean getting stuck in a door and all that.![]()
I have a few dresses I would think both two and three times before wearing out. I think I've had all my skirts save one out in public.

Re: Skirts you like but scared to wear in public
Unfortunately, or fortunately, I am constantly experimenting. I made the big leap; wearing skirts in public, and now I am incrementally getting locals used to shorter, flarier and brighter examples. Incrementally is the key word because people adapt to small changes quicker and easier.
Also a plain fabric cargo skirt might be initially overlooked as a pair of shorts whereas a flowy, floral skirt will immediately identify itself as unapologetically unbifurcated.
Away from my local territory, say a radius of 200kms, there will always be the shock of my unconventional attire but these people I will probably never interact with nor ever see again.
As this topic is in the public viewing area, I will post a photo of a skirt I would like to wear in public but not me wearing it

Re: Skirts you like but scared to wear in public
Would I wear the above in public? Likely not. However, this is not down to fear so much as practicality -- on my frame, the shortness of the skirt would give precious coverage to the "undercarriage" and thus pose a possibility/probability of problems from the local constabulary. 17" is about as short as I dare to go without an unacceptable level of risk.
Anybody else can "have at it". It's a cute skirt!

If your friends were to reject you because you are not macho enough, then they were never really friends anyway. It is a good litmus test to determine who your friends really are. It has worked well for me. If people can’t accept the “real me”, then I don’t want them in my orbit.Barleymower wrote: ↑Mon Sep 29, 2025 9:13 amIt's not so much a particular skirt that worries me, it's more I have a large group of acquaintances who are very macho and if my clothing choices were commonly known it could wreck my involvement in the sport I love.Myopic Bookworm wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 10:14 pm I have a pencil skirt in black mock leather which I haven't dared to wear outside the house.

Jamie you have answered your own question. They are not my friends. Only two of the guys I shoot with are my friends.jamie001 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 29, 2025 2:29 pm

All the rest are just guys I know on the circuit. We say hello have a little chat and that's it. And that's fine. I know the club shooters a little better and some will definetly speak out and most will definetly 'talk'. I'd just rather keep it to the sport.
I told one of my friends that my son wears skirts and he replied "how horse power does your car have?"
My other friend has a clearly gay son who is sometimes together with his partner. We have never talked about it. So why should I?

Re: Skirts you like but scared to wear in public
I bought a shirt dress online. I'm not particularly keen on the feel of the material, and I struggled to find a way of wearing it that looked right. (Too many dresses just don't work well on the unboobed, and waist ties are usually in the wrong place.) After spending far too much of the morning trying out the dress, and another dress in my collection, I was running late for a pick-up at the pharmacy. So I thought "oh bugrit" and put on the black 'leather' pencil skirt. Successfully walked to the local pharmacy, and then met a (female) friend on the way back and spent twenty minutes standing on the street corner chatting. So, another day on which the sky has failed to fall.Barleymower wrote: ↑Mon Sep 29, 2025 9:13 amIts all a matter of managing the risk.Myopic Bookworm wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 10:14 pm I have a pencil skirt in black mock leather which I haven't dared to wear outside the house.

Re: Skirts you like but scared to wear in public
Not literally "scared" but I have a few that I'd really like to wear but don't. Usually it comes down to a color or a print...I have my comfort zone that tends toward earth tones and typically masculine colors. Tartans excepted, of course; I feel a lot more freedom of expression in that genre. I also try to take my wife's comfort level into account: she will sometimes react quite negatively to a pattern, color, or style that I otherwise find quite acceptable.
Re: Skirts you like but scared to wear in public
I used to have a number of skirts I termed as house skirts, but over the last couple of years, most house skirts have made their way to the local Tesco. Then if I can wear them to Tesco, they then get worn to Cambridge my local town. Then if Cambridge, why not to London?
At each stage the sky stays in the same place and my skirting life continues.
Choosing a skirt to visit my mother and brother have in recent times become more of a bother, but family is far harder than public life.

Daily, a happy man in a skirt...
