It’s A Kilt
I know this item of clothing has nothing to do with kilts or skirts but it’s what’s written on the T-shirt that I found quite amusing.

My name is Arty. I’m a guy with a passion for wearing skirts, dresses and tights and a hobbiest musician and artist.

Re: It’s A Kilt
That brings up a question. Let's say the statement on the t-shirt is true. Given that, if I am wearing a skirt and I have something under it then it is a skirt. If I have nothing under does that make the skirt a kilt? Asking for a friend......

Re: It’s A Kilt
I would say No. A kilt is a particular type of skirt.
It is a wrap style and it has pleats across the back.
The tee shirt statement in my humble opinion is wrong. That doesn't mean it isn't somewhat factual in a lot of peoples minds. I have been asked that question many times while wearing a kilt.

KILT and SKIRT enjoy a semantic relationship in the same way as RAPIER and SWORD, or LIZARD and REPTILE, or BOURBON and WHISKY
The relationship is called "hyponymy".

N0 as a matter of fact, one can't tell. Not to be argumentative, but It's a skirt whether it meets the definition of a kilt or not.

Re: It’s A Kilt
Being pedantic, it's a t-shirt!
I know the Scots who wear kilts are keen to differentiate from a skirt, that's fine. Skirt is a general term. There are a variety of skirt styles with different names, and countries around the world have differing names for their skirt like garments.
However, they all have one thing in common - a single piece of material wrapped around the body and hangs from the waist. Skirt is the general term, differing labels are added to justify subtle differences.
Underwear or no underwear makes not the slightest difference to me in forming a definition. I did have a chuckle with regards this thread when reading and yes as t-shirt slogans go, this is a good one and does make you smile and chuckle.

Re: It’s A Kilt
The no underwear or "going commando" thing about the "Kilt" is just another aspect of the utter nonsense that has been built upon around it.
A skirt by any other name, I have no idea about the linguistics, but,
Steve.

I'd just say it is plain stupid and utterly pointless.

Ironically Stu, the utter density lies with the people who can not or will not accept that the "Kilt", is, indeed a skirt.
They have absorbed a lie of epic proportions, yet that one simple fact seems beyond them.
The wasted words and anxiety caused can only come second to that arising from a certain biblical passage bearing the name of a certain king.
Although I didn't have the exact words, I knew precisely what the "Kilt" was at 5 years old and enduring the purgatory of that Sunday School turned pub.

Thing is, as long as the "Like your skirt" insult works with guys wearing a kilt, the problem will remain. Once we here on the cafe, have made men wearing skirts common place and cool, the problem will go away.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

Such optimism Mouse.
The problem will remain as long as "Like your Skirt" is perceived as an insult by men in Kilts.
I'm not sure about how much difference the efforts from the cafe will make either.

Re: It’s A Kilt
I don't take any offense from people calling my kilt a skirt even though I do have a strong Scottish heritage. Of course I do live in the colonies so maybe I'm a bit uncouth. No matter I do enjoy wearing my kilt n skirts.
Re: It’s A Kilt
Just to be a bit contrary; there are a few guys who truly don't know what a kilt is, or may not recall the word and will issue a comment about "your skirt" -- some intended to be supportive, some sarcastic; and, there are a few chaps who know very well what a genuine kilt is, and if your kilt does not measure up, is in fact a glorified skirt, their comment about "your skirt" can also be a compliment. As for those who prefer to 'put down' other's clothing choices with a sarcastic tone, so be it -- usually ignore, or sometimes it is an opening for a retort for fun, education or to discharge a little of your own to dolts.
